A South Korean city designed fo r the future takes on a life of its own A Getting around a city is one thing and then theres the matter of getting fr o

10、m one city toanother. One vision of the perf e ct city of the fu ture is a place that of f ers easy access to air travel.In 2011, a University of North Carolina business professor named John Kasarda published a bookcalled Aerotropol区: The Way Well Live Next. Kasarda says fu ture cities should be bui

12、ury will increasingly be an aviation century, as the globe becomes increasinly connected by air, Kasarda says. Songdo, a city built fr om scratch in South Korea, is one of Kasardas prime examples. It has existed fo r just a few years. From the outset, it was designed on the basis of connectivity and

13、 competitiveness, says Kasarda. The gover n ment built the bridge d 订 ectly from the airport to the Songdo Inter n ational Business District. And the surface inf r astructure was built at the same time as the new airport. C Songdo is a stones throw from South Koreas Incheon A卯ort, its main inter n a

14、tional hub (枢纽) .But it takes a lot more than a nearby airport to be a city of the fu ture. Just building a place as aninter n ational business district doesnt mean it will become one. Park Yeon Soo co戊祝ved s city of the fu ture back in 1986. He considers Songdo his baby. Park sees himself as a visi

15、onary. Thirty years af t er he imagined the city, Parks baby is close to 70 percent built, with 36, 000 people living in the business district and 90,000 residents in greater Songdo. Its about an hour outside Seoul, built on fo rmer tidal flats along the Yellow Sea. Theres a Coast Guard building and

16、 a tall trade tower, as well as a park, golf course and university. DJ Chances are youve actually seen this place. Songdo appears in the most fa mous music video ever to come out of South Korea. Gangnam Style ref e rs to the fashionable Gangnam district in Seoul. But some of the video was fi lmed in

17、 Songdo. I dont know if you remember, there was a scene in a subway station. That was not Gangnam. That was actually Songdo, says Jung Won Son, a professor of urban development at Londons Bartlett School of Planning. Part of the reason to shoot there is that its new and nice. E The city was supposed

18、 to be a hub for global companies, with employees from all over the worldBut thats not how it has turn ed out. Songdos reputation is as a fu turistic ghost town. But thereality is more complicated. A bridge with big, light-blue loops leads into the business district. Inthe center of the main road, t

19、heres a long血e of fl ags of the world. On the comer, theres aStarbucks and a 7-Eleven-all of the inter n ational brands that you see all over the worldnowadays.F The city is not empty. There are mothers pushing baby carriages, old women with walkers evenin the middle of the day, when its 90 degrees

20、out. Byun Young-Jin chairs the Songdo real estateassociation and started selling property here when the fi 订 st phase of the city opened in 2005. Hesays demand has boomed in the past couple of years. Most of his clients are Korean. In fact, thedeveloper says, 99 percent of the homes here are sold to

21、 Koreans. Young families move herebecause the schools are great. And thats the problem: Songdo has become a popular Koreancity more popular as a residential area than a business one. Its not yet the fu turisticinter n ational business hub that planners皿agined. Its a great place to live. And its beco

22、ming agreat place to work, says Scott Summers, vice president of Gale Inter n ational, the developer ofthe city. The floor-to-ceiling windows of his companys of f i ces overlook Songdo Central Park,with a canal fu ll of small boats and people fishing. Shimmering (闪烁的) glass towers line thecanals edg

She goes back to Seoul every weekend. I say Im prison-breaking on Friday nights. But she has to make the prison break in her own ca

26、r. Theres no high-speed train connecting Songdo to Seoul, just over 20 miles away I Park Yeon Soo, the man who fr rst imagined Songdo, fe els fr ustrated, too. He says he built SouthKorea a luxury vehicle, like Mercedes or BMW. Its a good car now. But were waiting for agood driver to accelerate. But

27、 there are lots of other good cars out there, too.
