(1)It may seem strange that were discussing music from a Broadway production in this class, The Lion King especially, since its based on a popular Hollywood movie. (5)That way, some of the rhythms, instrument, harmonies, typical of non-western music contrast with and complement popular music more familiar to audiences in Nor

(6)So I want to spend the rest of this class and most of the next one on the music from the show The Lion King as a way of summarizing some of the technical distinctions between typical western music and the non-western music

、 that weve been studying. (7)Now the African influence on the music is clear. (8) The story takes place in Africa. (9)So the director got a South African composer to write songs with a distinctly African sound. (10) And the songs even include words from African languages. (11)But well get back to th

、e African influence later. (12)First lets turn to the music that was written for the shadow puppet scenes in The Lion King, music based on the Indonesian music used in the shadow puppet theater of that region.(1)也许在我们这门课上讨论百老汇制作的音乐剧有点儿奇怪,特别是狮子王,因为它是根据一个受欢迎的好莱坞电影改编的。

typical of:是的典型特征harmony hrmni:和声rhythm rim:节拍,韵律complement kmplmnt:n. (1)In ancient times, many people believed the earth was a flat disc. (2)Well, over 2,0

、00 years ago, the ancient Greek philosophers were able to put forward two good arguments proving that it was not. (3)Direct observations of heavenly bodies were the basis of both these arguments. (4)First, the Greeks knew that during eclipses of the moon, the earth was between the sun and the moon,

、and they saw that during these eclipses, the earths shadow on the moon was always round, they realized that this could be true only if the earth was spherical. (5)If the earth was a flat disc, then its shadow during eclipses would not be a prefect circle, it would be stretched out into a long ellips

、e. (6)The second argument was based on what the Greeks saw during their travels. (7)They noticed that the North Star, or Polaris, appeared lower in the sky when they traveled south, in the more northerly regions, the North Star appeared to them to be much higher in the sky. (8)By the way, it was als

、o from this difference in the apparent position of the North Star that the Greeks first calculated the approximate distance around the circumference of the earth, a figure recorded in ancient documents says 400,000 stadia, thats the plural of the word stadium. (9)Today, its not known exactly what le

(10)This would make the Greeks estimate about twice the figure accepted today, a very good estimate for those writing so long before even the first telescope was invented.(1)

approximate prksmt:adj.

、)Continuing our survey of the 19th century, lets take a look now at Harriet Beecher Stowe. (2)Now Stowe is best known for her novel Uncle Toms Cabin, a book that details the harshness of plantation life in the south. (3)The book was extremely popular in the United States as well as in other countrie

、s. (4)Ironically though, for all the attention given to Uncle Toms Cabin, its far from Stowes best work. (5)She did write one other novel about life in the south, but much of her best work has nothing with the south at all. (6)In fact, Stowes best writing is about village life in the New Englands st

(16)Throughout her life, she wrote poems, travel books, biographical sketches and childrens books, as well as novels for adults.(1)让我们继续对19世纪进行研究,现在来看看哈里耶持比彻斯托。

detail: n. (1)Im glad to see so many of you here. 24、we are seeing, who are experiencing hearing loss. (3)First, I want to go over some basic about hearing. (4)Then we can take a look at our school environment and see if we can figure out some ways to protect hearing. (5)The leading cause of preventable hearing loss is excessive noise. (6)Too much mod

、erate noise for a long time or some types of intense noise for even a short time can damage hearing. (7)Loudness is measured in units called decibels. (8)One decibel is the lowest sound that the average person can hear. (9)Sounds up to 80 decibels generally arent harmful. (10)Thats noise like traffi

(1)To get us started this semester I am going to spend the first two classes giving you background lectures about some basic cinematic concepts.
