It plays an important role in artistic communication. How to translate English lyrics into Chinese is an impo

This work focuses on the translation of English lyrics to Chinese from the perspective of Skopos theory to provide listeners with a good atmosphere of listening, better understandings of the themes and artistic conception of English songs. The theoretical guidance for the lyrics transla

5、tion is also provided. In addition, the basic principles and theories of lyrics translation, which can help direct the translation work and improve the quality of lyrics translation, are summarized in this thesis.Key Words: English lyrics;Translation;Functionalist translation theoryI. Introduction L

6、ife is colorful, peaceful and passionate with music. English music of different forms is easily found in bookstores and on the internet with the development of information and technology. As the amount of English songs imported to China has kept an increasing trend during the last decade, Chinese pe

7、ople can enjoy English songs from foreign countries. With frequent international exchanges, music is very important in global communication as an indispensable part of the culture. Music is without borders, regarding the song as the essential carrier to promote cultural exchange. Songs are special c

8、ultural exchange activities, not a plain language transformation. The translation in the target language should meet the target language culture, aesthetic habits, that is, Chinese translation of English lyrics for songs should be overwhelmingly understood by Chinese people. The purpose of translati

9、on is unique. The means to an end are also different, as are the principles of guiding translation. Song are combinations of language and music, bearing the weight of the culture of many factors. As a result, how to translate English lyrics into fluent Chinese lyrics is a big challenge for the trans

10、lators. This paper is about a study of the translation of English lyrics to Chinese from the perspective of functionalist translation theory. The application of functional translation theory in lyrics translation is analyzed and that the translators may try to convey the theme of the original text i

11、s emphasized to keep the genre of the original text and to compensate cultural differences. On the one hand, the author attempts to seek a more systematic theoretical framework for English lyrics translation. On the other hand, the author also analyzes the basic principles and methods of lyrics tran

12、slation to guide the translation practice to increase the quality of lyrics translation. At the same time, the thesis gives a hope to provide helpful clues and ideas for the further study on English lyrics translation. Lyrics translation has not been paid great attention by translators since the 198

13、0s. For the standard of lyrics translation, translation is not in a position to reach a consensus. Lyrics translation is of great difficulties and the accumulation of translation practice and research for those engaged in the lyrics translation has been far reached. In view of the role of songs in t

14、he modern social life, lyrics translation deserves attention. This paper through the perspective of functional translation theory of English lyrics translation, including the translation principles and methods to guide the translation practice and make the translation of English lyrics to Chinese ex

15、press the connotation of the original lyrics. II. Translation of English Lyrics to Chinese 2.1 History of Lyrics Translation China has a long history of translation. The recorded history of translation can be dated back to as early as the East Han dynasty during Emperor Mings reign (58-75AD) (Zhang

16、Zhiqiang, 1997: 2). In Chinas long feudal ages, with so many minorities speaking different languages and living together, cultural exchanges among people and foreign countries should have been wide spread to a large scale. Unfortunately, compared with the long recorded history of translation, Chinas recorded song-translation history can be only dated back to 100 years ago.The amount of English songs in China is as much as th
