The Cambridge University community is preponderantly British: 75% of our academic staff are British, 85% of our un
2、dergraduates, and almost 50% of our postgraduates. Collegiate Cambridge remains deeply committed to the education of outstanding British students. That assertion is fully consonant with a Cambridge fast becoming more international in many, many ways. A wealth of research collaborations between Cambr
3、idge academics and colleagues around the world are documented in the online International Directory to be launched by the University this year. Although teaching and learning are still overwhelmingly Cambridge-based activities and relatively few students study abroad, the number of international pro
4、grammes for training and education is growing. Cambridge Universitys global presence is such that already it has few if any equals. What Cambridge does well, and must keep doing, is respond to change in the world and help shape and lead it. As more and more people live and work across a range of cul
5、tures, our teaching must help prepare our students for that life. For graduate students, the potential transformation of Cambridge to a fully international University could be much closer if the decline continues in the number of British students studying for doctoral degrees, with dramatic shrinkag
6、e in certain fields. These students are not being kept out by international students: they are not applying, or not applying here. We must improve funding for UK postgraduate students as a matter of urgency. Cambridge is among the most beautiful universities in the world, and experiencing that beaut
7、y is part of what it means to be at Cambridge. We are an integral part of a lively and interesting city. There was a time in the 1950s and 60s when things looked different, and the university was too dominant in the local economy for anyones health. That changed, happily. 】iBT 特训之MIT校长Susan Hockfiel
8、d就职演说(1/2)Thank you, all of you for such an incredibly warm warm welcome to this community. I am deeply honored to have been selected as MITs 16th President. As a scientist, Ive always regarded MIT as a beacon projecting an incredibly bright light that has illuminated the path of discovery and innov
9、ation for the entire world. And I know that I am only one of countless people who have been inspired and on many occasions awed by MITs strengths along the entire continuous scholarship, from the most fundamental basic research into the nature of our world, to the most advanced applications and tech
10、nological innovations. It is of course the mission of every university to produce and disseminate knowledge and yet MIT has advanced both parts of this mission at an absolutely astonishing rate. Discoveries and innovations have poured forth from the Institute in a staggering torrent from engineering
11、 and science to be sure, but just as impressively from economics, businesses, the arts, the social sciences and humanities.As all of you might imagine, over the last several weeks I have become increasingly attuned to any mention of MIT. And perhaps not surprisingly, hardly a day has gone by without
12、 some news of some MIT discovery, some invention, some new program coming to my attention. MITs remarkable history of discovery and innovation alone might well have been enough to draw me here, but over these last few months, I have discovered another critically important feature of this institution
13、s character. Something that speaks to the values and ideas that seem to be the very foundation of this place. From my very first conversations in the search process, I kept hearing about three of MITs central values: the pursuit of truth, integrity and the great meritocracy. I heard this from truste
14、es, I heard it from faculty, I heard it from students and I heard it from staff members. And what I heard told me that here was a place whose values closely mirrored my own, a place whose mission I could truly embrace, and a place where Tom, Elizabeth and I could feel very much at home.Now I would g
15、uess that many of you are wondering how I imagine the future for MIT. First I have to reassure you Im not gonna be, bring a kennel of Yale bulldogs with us. You will all not be required to wear hats with whites on them. What I believe in is building strengths on strengths. Each of the MIT schools an
16、d activities must continue to be strong and distinctive, and we must continue to look for opportunities to amplify those strengths through collaboration, through shared vision and through shared work. My overarching goal is to help MIT to be an even greater MIT, to become even better at education, research and invention.Part of this goal will be met by ensuring that anyone who has the extraordinary talents and ambition to make the most of what
