TheUniversityofCambridgeisaplace,acommunity,andaninstitution.Itisalsoapervasivepresenceintheworld.TheCambridgeUniversitycommunityispreponderantlyBritish:

75%ofouracademicstaffareBritish,85%ofourundergraduates,andalmost50%ofourpostgraduates.CollegiateCambridgeremainsdeeplycommittedtotheeducationofoutstandingBritishstudents.

ThatassertionisfullyconsonantwithaCambridgefastbecomingmoreinternationalinmany,manyways.AwealthofresearchcollaborationsbetweenCambridgeacademicsandcolleaguesaroundtheworldaredocumentedintheonlineInternationalDirectorytobelaunchedbytheUniversitythisyear.AlthoughteachingandlearningarestilloverwhelminglyCambridge-basedactivitiesandrelativelyfewstudentsstudyabroad,thenumberofinternationalprogrammesfortrainingandeducationisgrowing.CambridgeUniversity’sglobalpresenceissuchthatalreadyithasfewifanyequals.

WhatCambridgedoeswell,andmustkeepdoing,isrespondtochangeintheworldandhelpshapeandleadit.Asmoreandmorepeopleliveandworkacrossarangeofcultures,ourteachingmusthelpprepareourstudentsforthatlife.Forgraduatestudents,thepotentialtransformationofCambridgetoafullyinternationalUniversitycouldbemuchcloserifthedeclinecontinuesinthenumberofBritishstudentsstudyingfordoctoraldegrees,withdramaticshrinkageincertainfields.Thesestudentsarenotbeingkeptoutbyinternationalstudents:

theyarenotapplying,ornotapplyinghere.WemustimprovefundingforUKpostgraduatestudentsasamatterofurgency.

Cambridgeisamongthemostbeautifuluniversitiesintheworld,andexperiencingthatbeautyispartofwhatitmeanstobeatCambridge.Weareanintegralpartofalivelyandinterestingcity.Therewasatimeinthe1950sand60swhenthingslookeddifferent,andtheuniversitywastoodominantinthelocaleconomyforanyone’shealth.Thatchanged,happily.

Thankyou,allofyouforsuchanincrediblywarm…warmwelcometothiscommunity.IamdeeplyhonoredtohavebeenselectedasMIT’s16thPresident.Asascientist,I'vealwaysregardedMITasabeaconprojectinganincrediblybrightlightthathasilluminatedthepathofdiscoveryandinnovationfortheentireworld.AndIknowthatIamonlyoneofcountlesspeoplewhohavebeeninspiredandonmanyoccasionsawedbyMIT’sstrengthsalongtheentirecontinuousscholarship,fromthemostfundamentalbasicresearchintothenatureofourworld,tothemostadvancedapplicationsandtechnologicalinnovations.

ItisofcoursethemissionofeveryuniversitytoproduceanddisseminateknowledgeandyetMIThasadvancedbothpartsofthismissionatanabsolutelyastonishingrate.DiscoveriesandinnovationshavepouredforthfromtheInstituteinastaggeringtorrentfromengineeringandsciencetobesure,butjustasimpressivelyfromeconomics,businesses,thearts,thesocialsciencesandhumanities.

Asallofyoumightimagine,overthelastseveralweeksIhavebecomeincreasinglyattunedtoanymentionofMIT.Andperhapsnotsurprisingly,hardlyadayhasgonebywithoutsomenewsofsomeMITdiscovery,someinvention,somenewprogramcomingtomyattention.MIT’sremarkablehistoryofdiscoveryandinnovationalonemightwellhavebeenenoughtodrawmehere,butovertheselastfewmonths,Ihavediscoveredanothercriticallyimportantfeatureofthisinstitution’scharacter.Somethingthatspeakstothevaluesandideasthatseemtobetheveryfoundationofthisplace.Frommyveryfirstconversationsinthesearchprocess,IkepthearingaboutthreeofMIT’scentralvalues:

thepursuitoftruth,integrityandthegreatmeritocracy.Iheardthisfromtrustees,Ihearditfromfaculty,IhearditfromstudentsandIhearditfromstaffmembers.AndwhatIheardtoldmethatherewasaplacewhosevaluescloselymirroredmyown,aplacewhosemissionIcouldtrulyembrace,andaplacewhereTom,ElizabethandIcouldfeelverymuchathome.

NowIwouldguessthatmanyofyouarewonderinghowIimaginethefutureforMIT.FirstIhavetoreassureyouI’mnotgonnabe,bringakennelofYalebulldogswithus.Youwillallnotberequiredtowearhatswithwhitesonthem.WhatIbelieveinisbuildingstrengthsonstrengths.EachoftheMITschoolsandactivitiesmustcontinuetobestronganddistinctive,andwemustcontinuetolookforopportunitiestoamplifythosestrengthsthroughcollaboration,throughsharedvisionandthroughsharedwork.MyoverarchinggoalistohelpMITtobeanevengreaterMIT,tobecomeevenbetterateducation,researchandinvention.

Partofthisgoalwillbemetbyensuringthatanyonewhohastheextraordinarytalentsandambitiontomakethemostofwhat
