In Young Goodman Brown, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses symbolism in order to analyze the theme of the story. The story talks about a m

4、an called Young Goodman Brown who leaves his innocent and pure world to a dark and evil forest. This journey to forest is a way for Young Goodman Brown to recognize the original nature of man. My paper will talk about the application of symbolism in Young Goodman Brown in three aspects: characters,

5、objects, and settings. And furthermore this paper will discuss the acceleration of symbolism in highlighting the theme. 8、dgments 13I. Introduction1.1 The content and themeThis story tells us about Young Goodman Brown. Goodman Brown is a pure, young, and good pilgrim. And he pursues morality and all kinds of beautiful thing. However, Brown kisses goodbye to his new-married wife, Faith, to that dark forest. During this

9、journey towards forest under the accompany of his fellow-traveller, Goodman Brown sees Goody Cloyse, Goody Cory, Deacon Gookin, even his Faith going to dark forest. In fact, those people are Goodman Browns deeply respectful and loving; but, they all come to the evil forest and do something bad and i

10、mmoral. To Goodman Browns surprise, his wife also comes here and joins this “party”. Brown says:” My Faith is Gone.” At the same time, Goodman Brown loses his faith and belief. So this journey subverts Goodman Browns belief, faith, and whole world. Meanwhile, Goodman Brown sees clearly the humanity

11、of all villagers. It is difficult for Goodman Brown to accept the sharp gap between reality and surface. In addition, he is good at dissecting peoples inner mind through using sy

13、mbolism, and he lays emphasis on morality and crime. At the same time, Nathaniel Hawthorne proposes washing crime and refining the heart by good behavior and self-repentance to gain the rescue. Hawthorne not only exposes the dark and evil aspect of society and man, but also shows the great amount of

14、 sympathy for protagonists. And Young Goodman Brown is a good example. In Young Goodman Brown, Hawthorne narrates that Goodman Brown leaves his happy and innocent world with his new-married wife to that evil forest. Through this tour to forest, Goodman Brown sees the villagers with kind and beauty i

15、n surface, but evil and ugly in essence. It is hard for Goodman Brown to accept such sharp gap between reality and surface. At last, Goodman Brown dies with gloom and disappointment. In this short novel, Hawthorne exposes the dark society and evil humanity. Although the plot is very simple, abundant

16、 symbolic images make the novel become richer, and this short story also turns into the researching focus of many scholars and professors.Symbolism comes from the word “symbol”, in Greek means a token that two sides separate one wood into two parts and hold one side separately in order to connect ea

17、ch other. Then it gradually evolves into an accustomed and conceptual representative as a kind of form. Hawthorne is very good at showing theme by using symbolism. The Scarlet Letter, The House of the Seven Gables, and Young Goodman Brown use symbolism to apply colors to a drawing, and put emphasis

18、on the destroy of Calvinisms control towards people, and on the hypocritical morality of upper parts of puritan. On the other hand, modern writers and poets also make use of symbolism to express their own special emotions. In Coastal Cemetery, French poet Paul Valery uses symbolism to express poets

19、own special thought about life and death, spirit and flesh. And the poet also gets a truth that we should cherish our reality and love our life. In L Oiseau bleu, Belgian playwright Maeterlinck, M makes good use of symbolism. The playwright not only gives L Oiseau bleu symbolic meaning: happiness, b

20、ut only points out that human need to transform from innocence to cognition in the process of contradict, then after getting the natural secret they overcome the innocent tragedy so that human being can gain spiritual freedom. Therefore, if the writer excavates the usage of symbolism thoroughly, he

21、can express his own special emotions and reveal the theme.1.3The definition and function of symbolismIn dictionary, the word “symbolism” means a system of symbols and symbolic representations. Actually, symbolism is a kind of art which can express special ideas or emotions. Symbolism doesnt describe

22、 something directly and doesnt limit them by comparing with specific images, but implies what do ideas and emotions mean, and uses the symbols without explanations in order to recreate them in readers mind. However, this is just one aspect of symbolism which refers to the individual part, not show t

23、he social aspect. In fact, symbolism has the second feature that is called transcendental symbolism. The specific images use common, wide, and ideal world to demonstrate symbol, not writers symbol of given thoughts or emotion. This ideal word exists in idea beyond the reality. The philosophical basi

24、s of symbolism is mysticism. It is an important point that symbolism reveals individual subjective mood to make people separating from real life. So we can just feel the abstract and unsteady essence which is full of individual part and obscure meaning. The symbolism not only can enhance the poems r

25、hyme, but also can strengthen artistic expression. On the other hand, symbolism can connect the small common thing with the whole wide world, so that readers can compare the events happening in the story to the events which take place in history or legend. Literature ReviewThe domestic researches Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne from symbolism, religion, theme, personality, and translation to study this short story.
