We are looking for outstanding undergraduate students as well as outstanding graduate students with Masters degree with some research experience. We are looking for postgraduat
2、e students in all areas in computer science and related areas, including but not limited to, artificial intelligence, data and knowledge management, networks and networking systems, software technologies, theoretical computer science and vision and graphics. After getting their PhDs, our students find jobs in worldwide research labs such as Microsoft Research, Google, IBM and top universities in Canada, Australia, Singapore, and Hon
6、g Kong. A student who has a masters degree is expected to graduate with a PhD in 3 years, and an undergraduate degree to graduate in 4 years. Starting in 2010, we are particularly happy to offer the prestigious Hong Kong PHD Fellowship of HK$20,000 (USD 2,580) per month, plus a travel allowance of H
7、K$10,000 (USD 1,290) for three years. Exceptionally qualified PhD applicants (top 10% in class, 85% GPA, excellent English command) are welcome to contact potential faculty supervisors and apply by Dec 1, 2009. 18、time they enter HKUST, a bachelors degree in computer science or a related science or engineering field. Students admitted to a postgraduate program must demonstrate competence in the following core computer science areas: Computer Organization Principles of Programming Languages Operating Systems D
19、esign and Analysis of Algorithms In addition, students admitted into the PhD program must demonstrate competence in: Theory of Computation Competence in these areas is appraised during the admission process. A student whose formal computer science background is deemed inadequate in any of the above
20、areas may be admitted on a provisional basis and will be required to take remedial courses prescribed by the Postgraduate Studies Committee and obtain a grade of at least B in these courses. Such additional requirements will be stipulated in the individual offer of admission. Deficiencies in any cor
21、e computer science area can be made up concurrently with postgraduate work.Applicants are required to submit: officially certified academic transcripts of undergraduate studies (and postgraduate studies, if any); results of an English proficiency test (see below); two letters of recommendation; a on
22、e-page statement of plan for the postgraduate study; and a completed application form for postgraduate admission. All students admitted into a postgraduate program must demonstrate sufficient competence in English. Students whose previous degrees are from an institution where the primary language of
23、 instruction is other than English should submit the results of an English proficiency test (such as TOEFL) together with their application. What is the application deadline?Applications for admission to postgraduate programs in September of the year are i
26、nvited from January onwards. The official application deadline for all CS programs will be in March.MPhil application will be processed in a batch immediately after the deadline passes. So, as long as they are submitted after the deadline, all MPhil application will be treated equally. PhD applicati
27、ons will be processed on a continuous basis as they arrive at ARR; qualified applicants will be accepted only until all places are filled. So, if you are applying for the PhD program, apply as soon as possible.Q3. Can I apply directly to the PhD program, skipping the Masters?You may, but preference
28、will be given to students who already have completed, or are completing, a MPhil or MEng degree. 29、information.Q4. How good do I need to be to be accepted as a MPhil student?There are no hard-and-fast rules for admission to the MPhil program. We rank applicants based on our judgment of their background and general ability to do a research thesis. In practice this usually means that the two most i
30、mportant criteria are your CGA and your letters of recommendation.Good letters of recommendation are essential. A letter from a faculty member that states he/she is willing to be your research supervisor is even better (but uncommon); one that states that she/he is willing to supervise you AND fund
31、your studentship directly out of his/her research grants is even better (but even rarer). We want to emphasize that the CGA is not everything. An applicant with a very strong letter of recommendation might be admitted over one with a slightly higher CGA but weaker letters.In the past most students w
32、ith B+/A- CGA or above (the exact CGA varied from year to year)and good letters were accepted. The exact number of students accepted depends upon many factors including number of studentships available to the department and a forecast of the number of students expected to graduate that year.Q5.
