TheDepartmentofComputerScienceandEngineeringatHongKongUSTisrecruitingPhDstudentstostartinFall2010.WearelookingforoutstandingundergraduatestudentsaswellasoutstandinggraduatestudentswithMastersdegreewithsomeresearchexperience.Wearelookingforpostgraduatestudentsinallareasincomputerscienceandrelatedareas,includingbutnotlimitedto,artificialintelligence,dataandknowledgemanagement,networksandnetworkingsystems,softwaretechnologies,theoreticalcomputerscienceandvisionandgraphics.Wealsoencouragestudentsinterestedinmulti-disciplinaryareassuchasbioinformatics,riskmanagementandbusinessintelligenceandcomputationalfinance.Tofindoutmoreaboutus,pleasevisitourCSEwebsite.

Ourdepartmentconsistsofoutstandingfacultymembersandgraduatestudentswithover40facultymembersandover100PhDstudents.OurmediumofteachingandresearchisEnglish.Besideshavingastrongpublicationtrackrecord,ourfacultyandstudentsareamongthefirsttodevelopadvancedandpopularP2Psystems,industrystandardsonRFIDandsensornetworks,computergraphicsandvisionsystems,large-scaledataminingandmachinelearningsystemsforWebsearch,GPUandparallelcomputingfordatabasequeryprocessing,tonameafew.AftergettingtheirPhDs,ourstudentsfindjobsinworldwideresearchlabssuchasMicrosoftResearch,Google,IBMandtopuniversitiesinCanada,Australia,Singapore,andHongKong.Astudentwhohasamaster'sdegreeisexpectedtograduatewithaPhDin3years,andanundergraduatedegreetograduatein4years.

Startingin2010,weareparticularlyhappytooffertheprestigiousHongKongPHDFellowshipofHK$20,000（~USD2,580）permonth,plusatravelallowanceofHK$10,000（~USD1,290）forthreeyears.ExceptionallyqualifiedPhDapplicants（top10%inclass,>85%GPA,excellentEnglishcommand）arewelcometocontactpotentialfacultysupervisorsandapplybyDec1,2009.ThisfellowshipawardisofferedcentrallybyUniversityGrantCouncilofHongKong.

WealsoofferalargenumberofpostgraduateresearchstudentshipawardsatHK$156,000peryear（~USD20,000/year）.OuradmissionrequirementforEnglishisoneofrecentTOEFL（cbt）>=580,IELTS>=7,orTOEFL（ibt）>=92bythetimeyouenterHKUST.TuitionfeeatHKUSTisaroundHK$42,100peryear.

Applicantsforadmissiontothepostgraduateprogramsarerequiredtohavecompleted,bythetimetheyenterHKUST,abachelor'sdegreeincomputerscienceorarelatedscienceorengineeringfield.Studentsadmittedtoapostgraduateprogrammustdemonstratecompetenceinthefollowingcorecomputerscienceareas:

Inaddition,studentsadmittedintothePhDprogrammustdemonstratecompetencein:

Competenceintheseareasisappraisedduringtheadmissionprocess.AstudentwhoseformalcomputersciencebackgroundisdeemedinadequateinanyoftheaboveareasmaybeadmittedonaprovisionalbasisandwillberequiredtotakeremedialcoursesprescribedbythePostgraduateStudiesCommitteeandobtainagradeofatleastBinthesecourses.Suchadditionalrequirementswillbestipulatedintheindividualofferofadmission.Deficienciesinanycorecomputerscienceareacanbemadeupconcurrentlywithpostgraduatework.

Applicantsarerequiredtosubmit:

AllstudentsadmittedintoapostgraduateprogrammustdemonstratesufficientcompetenceinEnglish.StudentswhosepreviousdegreesarefromaninstitutionwheretheprimarylanguageofinstructionisotherthanEnglishshouldsubmittheresultsofanEnglishproficiencytest（suchasTOEFL）togetherwiththeirapplication.TheEnglishproficiencytestmusthavebeentakenwithintwoyearsofthetimeofapplication.Notwithstandingtheabove,theDepartmentmayrequirenewlyadmittedstudentstoundergolanguageproficiencyassessmentand,ifdeemednecessary,totakeEnglishlanguageenhancementcourses.

AdmissiontotheDepartment'spostgraduateprogramswillbebasedontheapplicant'sacademicrecordaswellastheresearchneedsoftheDepartment.

ApplicationsforadmissiontopostgraduateprogramsinSeptemberoftheyearareinvitedfromJanuaryonwards.TheofficialapplicationdeadlineforallCSprogramswillbeinMarch.

MPhilapplicationwillbeprocessedinabatchimmediatelyafterthedeadlinepasses.So,aslongastheyaresubmittedafterthedeadline,allMPhilapplicationwillbetreatedequally.PhDapplicationswillbeprocessedonacontinuousbasisastheyarriveatARR;qualifiedapplicantswillbeacceptedonlyuntilallplacesarefilled.So,ifyouareapplyingforthePhDprogram,applyassoonaspossible.

Q3.CanIapplydirectlytothePhDprogram,skippingtheMasters?

Youmay,butpreferencewillbegiventostudentswhoalreadyhavecompleted,orarecompleting,aMPhilorMEngdegree.WedooccasionallyadmitexceptionallyqualifiedstudentsdirectlyfromtheUGprogramtoPhDstudies.IfyouareinterestedinpursuingthisoptionfurtherpleasecontactthePGcoordinatorforfurtherinformation.

Q4.HowgooddoIneedtobetobeacceptedasaMPhilstudent?

Therearenohard-and-fastrulesforadmissiontotheMPhilprogram.Werankapplicantsbasedonourjudgmentoftheirbackgroundandgeneralabilitytodoaresearchthesis.InpracticethisusuallymeansthatthetwomostimportantcriteriaareyourCGAandyourlettersofrecommendation.

Goodlettersofrecommendationareessential.Aletterfromafacultymemberthatstateshe/sheiswillingtobeyourresearchsupervisorisevenbetter（butuncommon）;onethatstatesthatshe/heiswillingtosuperviseyouANDfundyourstudentshipdirectlyoutofhis/herresearchgrantsisevenbetter（butevenrarer）.WewanttoemphasizethattheCGAisnoteverything.AnapplicantwithaverystrongletterofrecommendationmightbeadmittedoveronewithaslightlyhigherCGAbutweakerletters.

InthepastmoststudentswithB+/A-CGAorabove（theexactCGAvariedfromyeartoyear）andgoodletterswereaccepted.Theexactnumberofstudentsaccepteddependsuponmanyfactorsincludingnumberofstudentshipsavailabletothedepartmentandaforecastofthenumberofstudentsexpectedtograduatethatyear.
