The story aroused many different interpretations as to its theme since its publication. The paper applies another possible interpretation of the st

2、orys theme: the theme of deathnot only the inequality and even the death of relationship exists in the American couple, but also the death exists between human friendship, spirit and life itself, by close reading its context and digesting the details. From the writers personal life and the social ba

3、ckground reflected in the novel, we know that Hemingway, in fact, through showing this theme, pays his careful attention to encounter of female in marriage and their awareness of pursuit to free and equality, and then further criticizes war that brought the tremendous suffering and harm. Based on th

4、is theme, the paper mainly discuses the author how to deepen the theme by writing methods. In this story, author mainly used four writing methods, such as iceberg theory, symbolism, repetition and comparison. Using of these writing methods, author can expound the real theme in limited passage, whats

5、 more, leave the infinite imagination space for readers. So the readers can understand the characters, theme and implied meanings from different points and levels. 6、篇自问世以来，出现了各种不同的、甚至相互矛盾的主题阐释。然而，通过细读原文和结合时代背景，该短篇的深层主题则显现为死亡它既是美国夫妇婚姻关系的不平等甚至名存实亡，也是人类友谊的死亡和精神以及生命本身的死亡。通过分析作家的生活经历和小说反映的时代背景，我们可知，海明威实际上是通过表现这样的主题，关注女性在婚姻中的不平等遭遇以及其追求自由平等的自我意识，进而抨击战争给人类带来的巨大灾难和危害。基于这一主题，本篇论文主要探讨作者从创作手法上如何加深主题。在这篇小说里，作者主要运用到了四种创作手法，分别为：冰山理论，重复，象征手法，以及对比。这些创作手法的运用，使作者能在有限的篇幅内，阐述深刻的主题，

10、oductionErnest Hemingway is a novelist and short story writer who became one of the best-known American authors of the 20th century, and is the representation of “Lost Generation”. Hemingway is best known for the novels, such as The Sun Also Rises （1926）, A Farewell to Arms （1929）, For Whom the Bell

11、 Tolls （1940）, and The Old Man and the Sea （1952）, and so on. Most of Hemingways novels show us heroes who are symbols of honest, courage, muscularity and compassion. So he is always regarded as a writer of great masculinity, even an adorer of male society. However, his early short stories revealed

12、strongly womans consciousness. He attached much importance to womans social role and sex attitude, as well as the problem of womans sentiment and psychology. Cat in the Rain embodied Hemingways thinking of womans position in family in 1920s. Ernest Hemingways works have attracted numerous readers an

13、d a great many scholars all over the world have spent much academic energy on them from different perspectives. In 1925, including Cat in the Rain, Hemingway published his first collection of fifteen short stories, In Our Time. His colloquial and economical style of writing with the powerful effect

14、began to catch readers attention （Wang 2003）. However, very few critics have associated Hemingways works with the writing methods and their functions. In China, someone realized that studying about iceberg techniquewhich one of the writings methodscan master the theme of the novel; however, there ar

15、e still some limitations and problems in research. With the hope of enriching the research of the great litterateur and further arousing peoples awareness, this thesis aims to present the necessity and importance of writing methods and strategies, and further analyze approaches of how to deepen the

16、theme of novels in the current reading and writing practice. . Literature ReviewThere were many scholars who discuss Ernest Hemingway and his works, included Cat in the Rain. In America and many countries, Hemingway was studied as a phenomenon or a kind of knowledge. Many scholars have studied Hemin

17、gway works from different perspectives, such as the theme, the characteristics and also the personal background. By analyzing the theme of Hemingways fiction, “grace under pressure”（Chang 221）, Hemingway gave us a unique impression of his works. Whats more, Stoneback H. R. thinks religion after comm

18、enting on Hemingways works. As for The Sun Also Rises, Martin Wendy carefully analyzed the characters of this story （Zou 1995）. From 1930s, many scholars in our countries started to research Hemingway and his works. The first comment on Hemingway was written by Huang Yuan, who pointed out the symbol

19、ism in writing methods of Hemingway （Qiu 1990）. Shen Xin and Yang Hua in the article “ Cat in the Rain: the Ghost of DeathAn Analysis of Archetypes and Theme in Hemingways Story”（2007） points that “the sea”, “the garden”, “big palms”, “the war monument”, “the rain” and “the cat”, appear in the novel

20、 one by one. These things are not put together randomly. These things have many abundant symbolic meaning. Theme of Cat in the RainA. Plot summaryCat in the Rain with a simple plot tells a pair of young couples came to vacation in the United States defeated Italy after WWI. It is one of his famous s

21、hort stories, depicting a pair of young American couples that spends their holiday in an Italian hotel. It is a rainy day and the wife catches a sight of a poor cat crouching under a table from the rain outside, and wants to bring it to her hotel room. When she goes to retrieve the cat, however, it

22、is gone. So she returns to the hotel room and starts a conversation with her husband George, who is reading all the time, telling him how much she wants to have a cat and other things, and then about changing her whole life. Her husband, however, seems to be terribly annoyed by her and not intereste

23、d at all. At the end of the story there is a knock on the door and the maid stands there holding a big tortoise-shell cat for the American woman at the request of the hotelkeeper. Hemingway uses the usual zero at the end of the story. By no further description of reflection about the wife and husban

24、d who see a big tortoise-shell cat, but leaving the reader with a rich imagination. In a word, the simple plot of the story is “see the catlook for the catwant a catget a cat”.B. The background informationCat in the Rain used the 1920s of the United States and the Italian society as the background,

25、through the description of heroine who was trying to save a cat before and after the rain, and revealed the spiritual world of the post-war American. In the 1920s, the United States has just gone through a war victory. However, the American people tasted little joy after the victory and then turned

26、into a greater state of confusion and despair. At that time, the feminism movement started to sprout that women didnt reconcile to be append ant to men and sacrifice to their families any more. And many women were crusading for their own rights.After serving as a Red Cross Ambulance driver in Italy

27、during WWI, Ernest Hemingway married Hadley Richardson. Immediately after their marriage, the couple moved to Paris. It was here that his story Cat in the Rain was written. In writing this novel, Hemingway and Hadleys relations were tense. In 1923, the rift between them obviously appeared after the

28、birth of their first child. Therefore, this story has the authors own husbands shadow. The huge gap between them was growing. They have been unable to communicate, thus breaking up is imperative. It is significant that Hemingway recognized what was going wrong in his marriage to Hadley, he even reco

29、gnized his own part in it, but he obviously felt powerless to change. It should come as no surprise that within a few years, Hemingway divorced.C. Analysis of the theme of contentThere is no obvious and clear theme in this short story, just about a trivial matter between American couple in the daily

30、 life. But if we take into consideration the background of the storyafter the WWI in Europe, and the major thought and feeling of Hemingway at that time, readers can see that this is implicit in the two interrelated themes: the anti-war thinking and emotional crisis are associated with the awareness of pursuit to free and equality by female. The theme of the novel is expressing the authors anti-war thinking and the mental state of contemporary Americans, and the destiny
