2、eforthesebigdecisions.wenotonlyhaveaparliamentarydemocracy,butonquestionsaboutthearrangementsforhowwe'vegovernedtherearetimeswhenitisrighttoaskthepeoplethemselvesandthatiswhatwehavedone.TheBritishpeoplehavevotedtoleavetheEuropeanUnionandtheirwillmustberespected.iwanttothankeveryonewhotookpartint

3、hecampaignonmysideoftheargument,includingallthosewhoputasidepartydifferencestospeakinwhattheybelievewasthenationalinterestandletmecongratulateallthosewhotookpartintheLeavecampaignforthespiritedandpassionatecasethattheymade.ThewilloftheBritishpeopleisaninstructionthatmustbedelivered.itwasnotadecision

4、thatwastakenlightly,notleastbecausesomanythingsweresaidbysomanydifferentorganisationsaboutthesignificanceofthisdecision.Sotherecanbenodoubtabouttheresult.acrosstheworldpeoplehavebeenwatchingthechoicethatBritainhasmade.iwouldreassurethosemarketsandinvestorsthatBritain'seconomyisfundamentallystron

5、gandiwouldalsoreassureBritonslivinginEuropeancountriesandEuropeancitizenslivingheretherewillbenoimmediatechangesinyourcircumstances.Therewillbenoinitialchangeinthewayourpeoplecantravel,inthewayourgoodscanmoveorthewayourservicescanbesold.wemustnowprepareforanegotiationwiththeEuropeanUnion.Thiswillnee

6、dtoinvolvethefullengagementoftheScottish,welshandnorthernirelandgovernmentstoensurethattheinterestsofallpartsofourUnitedKingdomareprotectedandadvanced.Butaboveallthiswillrequirestrong,determinedandcommittedleadership.i'mveryproudandveryhonouredtohavebeenPrimeministerofthiscountryforsixyears.ibel

7、ievewe'vemadegreatsteps,withmorepeopleinworkthaneverbeforeinourhistory,withreformstowelfareandeducation,increasingpeople'slifechances,buildingabiggerandstrongersociety,keepingourpromisestothepoorestpeopleintheworldandenablingthosewholoveeachothertogetmarriedwhatevertheirsexuality,butaboveall

8、restoringBritain'seconomicstrength.andi'mgratefultoeveryonewho'shelpedtomakethathappen.ihavealsoalwaysbelievedthatwehavetoconfrontbigdecisions,notduckthem.Thatiswhywedeliveredthefirstcoalitiongovernmentin70years,tobringoureconomybackfromthebrink.it'swhywedeliveredafair,legalanddecisi

9、vereferenduminScotland.andit'swhyimadethepledgetorenegotiateBritain'spositionintheEuropeanUnionandtoholdthereferendumonourmembershipandhavecarriedthosethingsout.ifoughtthiscampaignintheonlywayiknowhow,whichistosaydirectlyandpassionatelywhatithinkandfeel-head,heartandsoul.iheldnothingback,iwa

10、sabsolutelyclearaboutmybeliefthatBritainisstronger,saferandbetteroffinsidetheEuropeanUnionandimadeclearthereferendumwasaboutthisandthisalone-notthefutureofanysinglepoliticianincludingmyself.ButtheBritishpeoplehavemadeaverycleardecisiontotakeadifferentpathandassuchithinkthecountryrequiresfreshleaders

11、hiptotakeitinthisdirection.iwilldoeverythingicanasPrimeministertosteadytheshipoverthecomingweeksandmonthsbutidonotthinkitwouldberightformetotrytobethecaptainthatsteersourcountrytoitsnextdestination.Thisisnotadecisioni'vetakenlightlybutidobelieveit'sinthenationalinteresttohaveaperiodofstabili

12、tyandthenthenewleadershiprequired.ThereisnoneedforaprecisetimetabletodaybutinmyviewweshouldaimtohaveanewprimeministerinplacebythestartoftheconservativePartyconferenceinoctober.deliveringstabilitywillbeimportantandiwillcontinueinpostasPrimeministerwithmycabinetforthenextthreemonths.Thecabinetwillmeet

13、onmonday,theGovernoroftheBankofEnglandismakingastatementaboutthestepsthattheBankandtheTreasuryaretakingtoreassurefinancialmarkets.wewillalsocontinuetakingforwardtheimportantlegislationthatwesetbeforeParliamentintheQueen'sSpeech.andihavespokentoHermajestytheQueenthismorningtoadviseherofthestepsth

14、atiamtaking.anegotiationwiththeEuropeanUnionwillneedtobeginunderanewprimeministerandithinkit'srightthatthisnewprimeministertakesthedecisionaboutwhentotriggerarticle50andstarttheformalandlegalprocessofleavingtheEU.iwillattendtheEuropeancouncilnextweektoexplainthedecisiontheBritishpeoplehavetakena

15、ndmyowndecision.TheBritishpeoplehavemadeachoice,thatnotonlyneedstoberespectedbutthoseonthelosingsideoftheargument-myselfincluded-shouldhelptomakeitwork.Britainisaspecialcountry-wehavesomanygreatadvantages-aparliamentarydemocracywhereweresolvegreatissuesaboutourfuturethroughpeacefuldebate,agreattradi

16、ngnationwithourscienceandarts,ourengineeringandourcreativity,respectedtheworldover.andwhilewearenotperfectidobelievewecanbeamodelforthemulti-racial,multi-faithdemocracy,thatpeoplecancomeandmakeacontributionandrisetotheveryhighestthattheirtalentallows.althoughleavingEuropewasnotthepathirecommended,iamthefirsttopraiseourincrediblestrengths.isaidbeforethatBritaincansurviveoutsidetheEuropeanUnionandindeedthatwecouldfindaway.nowthedecisionhasbeenmadetoleave,w
