Goodmorningeveryone,thecountryhasjusttakenpartinagiantdemocraticexercise,perhapsthebiggestinourhistory.over33millionpeoplefromEngland,Scotland,wales,northernirelandandGibraltarhaveallhadtheirsay.weshouldbeproudofthefactthatintheseislandswetrustthepeopleforthesebigdecisions.wenotonlyhaveaparliamentarydemocracy,butonquestionsaboutthe
arrangementsforhowwe'vegovernedtherearetimeswhenitisrighttoaskthepeoplethemselvesandthatiswhatwehavedone.TheBritishpeoplehavevotedtoleavetheEuropeanUnionandtheirwillmustberespected.
iwanttothankeveryonewhotookpartinthecampaignonmysideoftheargument,includingallthosewhoputasidepartydifferencestospeakinwhattheybelievewasthenationalinterestandletmecongratulateallthosewhotookpartintheLeavecampaignforthespiritedandpassionatecasethattheymade.ThewilloftheBritishpeopleisaninstructionthatmustbedelivered.
itwasnotadecisionthatwastakenlightly,notleastbecausesomanythingsweresaidbysomanydifferentorganisationsaboutthesignificanceofthisdecision.Sotherecanbenodoubtabouttheresult.acrosstheworldpeoplehavebeenwatchingthechoicethatBritainhasmade.iwouldreassurethosemarketsandinvestorsthatBritain'seconomyisfundamentallystrongandiwouldalsoreassureBritonslivinginEuropeancountriesandEuropeancitizenslivingheretherewillbenoimmediatechangesinyourcircumstances.
Therewillbenoinitialchangeinthewayourpeoplecantravel,inthewayourgoodscanmoveorthewayourservicescanbesold.wemustnowpreparefora
negotiationwiththeEuropeanUnion.ThiswillneedtoinvolvethefullengagementoftheScottish,welshandnorthernirelandgovernmentstoensurethattheinterestsofallpartsofourUnitedKingdomareprotectedandadvanced.Butaboveallthiswillrequirestrong,determinedandcommittedleadership.i'mveryproudandveryhonouredtohavebeenPrimeministerofthiscountryforsixyears.
ibelievewe'vemadegreatsteps,withmorepeopleinworkthaneverbeforeinourhistory,withreformstowelfareandeducation,increasingpeople'slifechances,
buildingabiggerandstrongersociety,keepingourpromisestothepoorestpeopleintheworldandenablingthosewholoveeachothertogetmarriedwhatevertheirsexuality,butaboveallrestoringBritain'seconomicstrength.andi'mgratefultoeveryonewho'shelpedtomakethathappen.
ihavealsoalwaysbelievedthatwehavetoconfrontbigdecisions,notduck
them.Thatiswhywedeliveredthefirstcoalitiongovernmentin70years,tobringoureconomybackfromthebrink.it'swhywedeliveredafair,legalanddecisivereferenduminScotland.andit'swhyimadethepledgetorenegotiateBritain's
positionintheEuropeanUnionandtoholdthereferendumonourmembershipandhavecarriedthosethingsout.
ifoughtthiscampaignintheonlywayiknowhow,whichistosaydirectlyandpassionatelywhatithinkandfeel-head,heartandsoul.iheldnothingback,iwasabsolutelyclearaboutmybeliefthatBritainisstronger,saferandbetteroffinsidetheEuropeanUnionandimadeclearthereferendumwasaboutthisandthisalone-notthefutureofanysinglepoliticianincludingmyself.
ButtheBritishpeoplehavemadeaverycleardecisiontotakeadifferentpathandassuchithinkthecountryrequiresfreshleadershiptotakeitinthisdirection.iwilldoeverythingicanasPrimeministertosteadytheshipoverthecomingweeksandmonthsbutidonotthinkitwouldberightformetotrytobethecaptainthatsteersourcountrytoitsnextdestination.Thisisnotadecisioni'vetakenlightlybutidobelieveit'sinthenationalinteresttohaveaperiodofstabilityandthenthenewleadershiprequired.
ThereisnoneedforaprecisetimetabletodaybutinmyviewweshouldaimtohaveanewprimeministerinplacebythestartoftheconservativePartyconferenceinoctober.deliveringstabilitywillbeimportantandiwillcontinueinpostasPrime
ministerwithmycabinetforthenextthreemonths.Thecabinetwillmeetonmonday,theGovernoroftheBankofEnglandismakingastatementaboutthestepsthattheBankandtheTreasuryaretakingtoreassurefinancialmarkets.
wewillalsocontinuetakingforwardtheimportantlegislationthatwesetbeforeParliamentintheQueen'sSpeech.andihavespokentoHermajestytheQueenthismorningtoadviseherofthestepsthatiamtaking.anegotiationwiththeEuropeanUnionwillneedtobeginunderanewprimeministerandithinkit'srightthatthisnewprimeministertakesthedecisionaboutwhentotriggerarticle50andstarttheformalandlegalprocessofleavingtheEU.iwillattendtheEuropeancouncilnextweektoexplainthedecisiontheBritishpeoplehavetakenandmyowndecision.TheBritishpeoplehavemadeachoice,thatnotonlyneedstoberespectedbutthoseonthelosingsideoftheargument-myselfincluded-shouldhelptomakeitwork.Britainisaspecialcountry-wehavesomanygreatadvantages-a
parliamentarydemocracywhereweresolvegreatissuesaboutourfuturethroughpeacefuldebate,agreattradingnationwithourscienceandarts,ourengineeringandourcreativity,respectedtheworldover.andwhilewearenotperfectidobelievewecanbeamodelforthemulti-racial,multi-faithdemocracy,thatpeoplecancomeandmakeacontributionandrisetotheveryhighestthattheirtalentallows.
