The novel is largely the story of one man, Heathcliff, a foundling brought by Mr.Earnshaw to

6、 Wuthering Heights at the time when the boy was a child. Throughout the novel, Heathcliffs personality, on one side, could be defined as dark, selfish and brutal. He is a dangerous character, with rapidly changing moods, capable of deep-seed hatred, and incapable, it seems, of any kind of forgivenes

7、s or compromise. On the other side, the love between Heathcliff and Catherine is the dominant line in the whole story.Heathclifflife could be divided into three periods in which he plays as different rolesThe thesis tells the three different roles that Heathcliff plays in his different life periods.

The thesis is devided into three parts in which Heathcliff plays as different roles. In the first part, as a foundling and suffer,

10、 Heathcliff spend his misery childhood and left Wuthering Heights with hate in his heart. The second part tells us that when Heathcliff comes back, he begins his plan as a usurper and avenger. Finally Heathcliff succeed in his plan, but he could never get the love and his life ends. 1. The foundling

11、 and SufferFrom the beginning of the novel and most likely from the beginning of his life, he has suffered pain and rejection. When he is brought to Wuthering Heights by Mr. Earnshaw, he is viewed as a thing rather than a child. Mrs. Earnshaw was ready to fling it out of doors, while Nelly put it on

12、 the landing of the stairs hoping that it would be gone the next day. Without having done anything to deserve rejection, Heathcliff is made to feel like an outsider, following the death of Mr. Earnshaw, suffers cruel mistreatment at the hands of Hindley. In these formative years, he is deprived of l

13、ove, sociability and education, according to Nelly, Hindleys treatment of Heathcliff was enough to make a fiend of a saint. He is separated from the family, reduced to the status of a servant, forced to become a farm hand, undergoes regular beatings and is forcibly separated from Catherine. Personal

14、ity that Heathcliff develops in his adult life has been formed in response to the deprivation of his childhood. Heathcliff received constant reminder of his lesser status e.g. on his first visit to the Grange, Catherine is taken into the Linton household, whereas Heathcliff is rejected, made fun of,

15、 and alienated. Later, when Catherine returns to Wuthering Heights, her changed appearance further alienates Heathcliff, a point emphasised during the visits of the Linton children, Heathcliff was not considered fit to join the party. The final sense of alienation and the most damning occurs with Ca

16、therines marriage to Edgar, this he considers a betrayal of his love for her, in favor of the social status and civilized existence of the Grange. Heathcliff is however proud and determined and does not cower when confronted by those who consider themselves to be superiors, his determination was evi

17、dent when taking advantage of Mr. Earnshaws favoritism and exchanging horses with young Hindley, though his situation and position is somewhat worsened after the death of Mr. Earnshaw, Heathcliffs pride nevertheless remains intact. When Catherine returned to the Heights after her five week stay at t

18、he Grange, she is much changed in appearance and makes fun of the ragged Heathcliff, when ordered to shake hands with Catherine by Hindley, Heathcliff refuses, saying-: I shall not stand to be laughed at, I shall not hear it. Similarly, when insulted by Edgar during one of his visits to the Heights,

19、 Heathcliff empties a tureen of applesauce over himCatherines stay at the Grange precipitates a further decline in Heathcliffs behavior. When she returns he is dirtier than before - I shall be as dirty as I please and I like to be dirty and I will be dirty. Later he confides to Nelly the purpose of

20、his meditations, I am trying to be settling how I shall pay Hindley back. I dont care how long I wait if I can only do it at last - I only wish I new the best way. Let me alone and Ill plan it out, while Im thinking of that, I dont feel pain.The unhappy things he suffered in his childhood played an

21、important role in the formation of his character. Finally, when the realization dawns on him that Catherine has chosen status, wealth and position in preference to him, he disappears for three years and returns in the guise of a gentleman. From then,Heathcliff begins his life as another role.2. The

22、usurper and AvengerThe returning Heathcliff, despite his outwardly civilized facade, was still demonic in air, A half civilized ferocity lurked yet in the depressed brows and the eyes full of black fire. In describing Heathcliff to Isabella, Catherine sees him as a fierce pitiless wolfish man . and

23、hed crush you like a sparrow. Catherine marks the change in him, his speech has acquired a new hammer blow rhythm, What new phase in his character is this, ponders Catherine. She sees beneath his unreclaimed nature something of his diabolism, and she compares Heathcliff to Hindley, It is as bad as o

24、ffering Satan a bad soul. Your bliss like his lies in inflicting misery.Heathcliffrole as a usurper could be seen from the time when he was brought back to Wuthering Heights .His presence in Wuthering Heights overthrows the prevailing habits of the Earnshaw family, members of the family soon become

25、involved in turmoil and fighting and family relationships become spiteful and hateful. Even on his first night, he is the reason Mr. Earnshaw breaks the toys he had bought for his children. Nelly recorded From the very beginning he bred bad feelings in the house. Heathcliff usurps the affections of

26、Mr. Earnshaw to the exclusion of young Hindley-: The young master had learnt to regard his father as an oppressor rather than a friend. Such is the extent of Heathcliffs usurpation, which Hindley is sent off to boarding school. As an adult, Heathcliff repeats the process, as he usurps the affections

27、 of Hareton and takes pride in the fact that he would be defended by the son in a fight with the father. Ultimately, Heathcliff parallels the cuckoo in taking over ownership of the Heights, thereby dispossessing the rightful heir, Hareton. Heathcliff destroys the natural familial emotional bonds whi

28、ch previously existed in the Earnshaw household. His presence results in a polarization within the family, at first Mr. Earnshaw and the Catherine become his allies, whereas Hindley becomes his enemy. Heathcliffs dominant personality quickly becomes evident - You must exchange horses with me, I dont

29、 like mine. This incident demonstrates the extent to which Heathcliff has already been hardened and brutalized. The ragged new-comer to Wuthering Heights is an image of a human creature reduced to its bare animal essence, the naked will to live. Nellys comment about Heathcliffs ability to withstand

30、pain supports this point of view, He would withstand Hindleys blows without winking or shedding a tear. Heathcliffs dominant will was being fed by Mr. Earnshaws favoritisms, when he dies this changes, Heathcliff then suffers the tyranny of Hindley. From this point on, the revenge theme begins in the

31、 novel. Heathcliffs recollection of the Grange in Chapter 6 is tied this first inkling of revenge, If I might have the privilege of flinging Joseph off the highest gale and painting the house front with Hindleys blood. Heathcliffs language at the Grange indicated a malevolent attitude, Ive vociferat

32、ed curses enough to annihilate any fiend in Christendom. Heathcliffs hatred for the Linton family is traceable to this moment - Yet the villain scowls so plainly in his face, would it not be a kindness to the country to hang him at once before he shows his nature in acts as well as in features.
