However, it has only been about thirty years since the anthropologist RLBirdwhistell established the kinesics. Bod
2、y language, as a young subject, has just studied for more than thirty years. In foreign countries, it has been prevalent for a certain time about the study of body language and experts study the body language from different aspects in a deeper way. Some scientists in foreign countries have concluded
3、 that the face of human beings can present about 250,000 kinds of different expressions. In Japan, a psychologist drew a conclusion that eyebrows could convey more than forty kinds of meanings. In the 1980s, body language has become a new edge discipline, attracting the linguists for its further stu
4、dy. In China, Hu wuzhong thinks that non-verbal communication as an independent discipline is the most important component in language communication. However, it is just the beginning of the study about the study of body language and the body language with Chinese characteristics has not been set up
5、.When people speak of the communication, first they will think of the language, which is the verbal behavior. The verbal behavior is a process relying on the language instrument, including text (written languages) and verbal (oral language) to carry through communion delivering idea and opinion and
6、transferring information. Language is an important tool of human communication, but it is not the only tool of communication. In fact, in addition to language, there is a more abundant content of the means of communication that is non-verbal. The non-verbal communication is the language of all the a
7、cts of communication; it is very frequent in the frequency of daily life. A smile, a look, and a gesture belong to be non-verbal behavior (huang, 2003:16). It is difficult to fancy and cannot be processed that the communication between the people just depend on words without any accompanying gesture
8、s or postures. That, at least, is not a sufficient communication. It is impossible not to have the verbal behavior in humans communication, but the non-verbal communication goes with the verbal communication. Both of them form the complete process of communication and also have their own characteris
9、tics and functions. Non-verbal communication can represent peoples psychological activities richly and accurately. As the main component of non-verbal communication, body language has its own trait, effect, and function. It must comply with the “principles of cooperation” just as verbal communicatio
10、n (Yang, 1994: 16). In the thesis, it mainly analyses the differences between the Chinese and Western body language and their application in communication. What is more, we can learn effective methods to guide the communication in cross-cultural communication. In order to understand a culture well a
11、nd make the communication more effective, it is necessary and significant to know the definition, the importance and discuss the characteristics and functions of body languages. At the same time, it is also very useful to enhance the communication and deepen the understanding from the research of th
12、e differences. We can build up better relationships and harmonious atmospheres with western countries from the thesis. Chapter2 The Definition, Importance and Function of Body Language in Communication2.1 The Definition of Body LanguageBody language, as a most component part of nonverbal language, w
13、hich is not a language in the strict sense of the word “language”. “Body language is expressing how one feels by ones sitting, standing, moving, etc, rather by words”(Oxford Advanced Learners English-Chinese Dictionary, 1997). Body language is also called Kinesics, including eye contact, gestures, p
14、ostures, facial expressions, and physical distance. 2.2 The Importance of Body LanguageAn investigation into the functions of the factors of verbal and nonverbal communications shows: 35% information is transferred by language; the other 65% are by nonverbal patterns (Samovaretal, 1981). Other study
15、 indicates: only 7% emotions in peoples communication are passed by language. The other 93% are by nonverbal patterns. American scholar Deleig Bronan (1991) pointed out that Humans communication consists of writing, oral and body three parts. Because of culture prejudices, a great majority of educat
16、ed people often think that written language is most important; the oral language is the second. The body language is ranked last. However, whether from the continuously evolution of whole humanity or from a personal point of view, the study indicates that body language is the most important part amo
17、ng the three parts. This shows the necessity and importance of body language.Body language in communication plays an irreplaceable role in humans communications. Psychology study found: In the face-to-face communication between two people, more than 50% of the exchange of information is achieved thr
18、ough a silent body language. Body Language is an international one, and different countries in the case of language barrier can use body language to communicate. It has been found that people with a daily average of speech, only 10% of the time of the contacts communication with verbal language. Wit
19、h people of their time are engaged in a subtle body language to communicate. Sometimes, the body language is enough to express all the information, but rather redundant language. As long as people feel that they are in the scope of one another, body language channels of communication exist. The so-c
20、alled body language means, includes those from the eyes, physical contact, posture moves, facial expressions, as well as the non-verbal signals to the body. As different culture has been deeply ingrained in their habits and accepts the opposite signal. Therefore, we should not overlook the impact of
21、 cultural binding on body language and the environment given differences in the different meanings. In our conversation, the communication means is not limited to words, although we are not aware of this point. Our facial expressions, gestures, movements in other parts of the body, can convey the me
22、ssage to the people around. Lending a hand with a smile is to show the welcome; frowning expresses dissatisfaction; nodding is agreement, and waving means goodbye. When listening to speech or report, the body relies on against the back of a chair or ones yawn, which reflects the speech or report uni
23、nteresting. It is generally accepted that these actions indicated above sense, at least the Chinese and Americans are like this. These actions are part of the means of communication. Body language is a part of our culture. However, in a different culture, the significance of body language is not exa
24、ctly the same. All ethnic groups have different ways of the non-discourse. Therefore, the effective use of English Communication, in some language must be understood by the speakers of gestures, movements, and can be expressed by the meaning of such behavior. 2.3 The Function of Body Language 2.3.1
25、To Exchange IdeasTo exchange ideas is the most basic social function of the language. In daily verbal communication, body language is also involved in the oral communication. The speaker, consciously or unconsciously, uses body language to match the language for expressing ideas; the listeners also
26、understand ideas transferred by body language (Yang, 1994:26). Sometimes body language even can express ideas directly, especially at the kind of occasion that is inappropriate to speak or somebody doesnt want to speak. For example, at the place where is as quiet as the reading room, it is not appro
27、priate for people to talk or communicate.However, language can express peoples thought and reflect the reality. Body language can express and exchange ideas, but it can not be equivalent with verbal language in communication, especially in the complicated thought and emotions of human beings. However, if the body language can be used accompanying with the oral language, which can make peoples expressions better and complete. Besides p
