7、f marriage CONTENTS摘要 iAbstract iiIntroduction The book Gone with the Wind written by the American female writer Margaret Mitchell is one of the most popular American novels, and it enables Margaret Mitchell to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1937. It sets in the background of Atlanta and the post-war rec
8、onstruction in the American Civil War, concentrates on the love and marriage of the main heroine Scarlett and tells a love story of several young men. Once the novel is published, it has become the best-selling works of fiction in the world. Its publication also makes Margaret Mitchell become a lite
9、rary celebrity overnight in the United States. Its sale breaks many records among the publishing circles when it is published, which now has been translated into more than thirty languages. The novel depicts a vivid picture of the social life during the American Civil War. It is a love story which t
10、akes place in the South America. The main character is Scarlett, whose father owns a big plantation called Tara in the southern state of Georgia. She falls in love with Ashley, but he loves his cousin Melanie and gets married with her. Scarlett first marries Charles and unfortunately he dies in the
11、war. Scarlett becomes a widow. When the war ends, life is really hard for her family and Scarlett takes charge of the whole family. Later she marries Frank who is shot to death and she becomes a widow again. The third time she marries Rhett Butler, a businessman, and they have a baby girl called Bon
12、nie. Bonnie unexpectedly dies from a fall because of an accident. After a series of events, Scarlett finally comes to understand that who she really needs is Rhett Butler. But Rhett Butler can no longer trust her and he is determined to leave Scarlett. It includes four sections in the paper. The fir
13、st section is literature review that is the research findings. Different people have different attitudes to Scarlett, so by collecting the research findings and studying them, a comprehensive view about Scarletts view of love and marriage is formed. The second section is about Scarletts marriages th
14、at are represented from three points which are the marriage based on revenge, the marriage based on money, and the marriage based on vanity. The third section is the formation of Scarletts view of marriage. There are two parts in this section. The first part is the social historical requirements. In
15、 this part, this paper represents the background information of the society and the American Civil War. The second part is about the personality of Scarlett: the life of Scarlett and her marriage experiences. And the fourth section is to analyze the significance of Scarletts view of marriage from th
16、e plot and the readers. 1 Literature Review Gone with the Wind is written by the American female writer Margaret Mitchell, which is her only work that has made a great influence to the world. It has won the worlds largest audience for its pathos and delicate style. Since it is published, it has beco
17、me the worlds best-selling book. Its sale is second only to the Bible, but the position in literary history is not so high. In 2005, Bing Wen specially writes an article on Scarlett, Gone with the Wind-A Course of Scarletts Love (Wen, 1992:23-96). The author gives a whole portrait of Scarletts love.
18、 Then in 2003, The Allure of the Unavailable: Using Scarlett OHara to Treat the Pattern of Chasing Unattainable Love Publishes (Cascio & Gasker, 2003:12-133). It describes Scarletts marriage from quite new eyesight. Even though we can find some works about Gone with the Wind and this popular best-se
19、lling novel wins a literary prize, little comments are about it. In the history of literature and literary manuals, either it is not mentioned or it is just mentioned with few words, but there is no specialized and detailed review on it, especially on her marriage. The studies in China about Scarlet
20、t are quite mature. Scholars appreciate it from different aspects, for example, from the background of the story, Analysis of the Back up Forces behind Scarlett in Gone with the Wind (Liu, 2010:112-234), which analyzes the back up forces of Scarlett for people.Also there is a scale of studies on Sca
21、rletts marriage. In the Studies of Gender-The Introduction to the Tragedy of Scarlets Marriage, the author analyzes the heroin Scarletts marriage tragedy in the literary Gone with the Wind. Chen Yujiang uses Maslows Theory of Need to analyze Scarletts different levels of need in different periods in
22、 Scarletts View of Marriage: Maslows Theory of Need Interpretation. “As long as who can meet the needs for her, she will be appointed to ensure her marriage to be able to get her need better satisfied.”(Chen, 2003:98). From this we can see Scarlett shows some of the true qualities of human nature in
23、 Gone with the Wind. The content is worth for us to study and discuss. Through the background and characteristics of Scarletts every marriage, people can look at the history, understand America in the 19th century, and understand the procession of the feminism in the United States. People also can l
24、earn to set up the correct attitude to marriage through the study of scarletts love and marriage.2 Scarletts MarriageScarlett is a particular South female who is pursuing the romantic love and has an extremely complex personality in the novel. It describes her emotional journey from 16 to 28. For th
25、ese 12 years, she marries 3 times, becomes a widow twice and has 3 children. She has been falling in love with a man who can not get married with her, but she misses a man who has been loved her for 12 years. She gets married 3 times, for revenge, for money, for vanity. At the same time, she tries h
26、er best for love, for survival, for family.Scarlett is a brave girl, who overcomes many difficulties and dangers, letting her family get out of trouble in the novel. As for her marriage, many people criticize her marriage for life, in order to achieve her goals at the expense of others interests, ev
27、en at the expense of her sisters happiness. Scarlett separates the love from the marriage in her view to love and marriage. In other words, she separates the spirit from the flesh. In addition to the first marriage, which is caused by anger, admiring vanity, and safeguarding the injured self-esteem,
28、 she gets married for the sake of money in her two marriages later. She can get married for material and survival at the expense of marriage, even at the expense of others interest (Sun, 2003:45). However, although Scarlett gets married in order to live, but never just for herself, but also for Ashl
29、ey and everyone in her family. She is not so selfish just like the criticism of others. Though she is selfish, but she also is a very kind woman, whose love is so pure. For love, she can do anything even take care of her rival Melanie. Scarletts first marriage is for the sake of revenge, in order to
30、 live besides to Ashley to maintain their relationship; the second marriage is for the money, more precisely, for her family, her dreams, her safety; the last marriage is caused by the temptation of Rhett. Throughout the history, so many women get married for living and finding a shelter. However th
31、is is not the womens fault, not the mens fault, but is caused by the prejudice and ignorance in that era. 2.1 The Marriage Based on RevengeThis is an unprepared marriage, which happens in the case of ignorant.Firstly Scarlett gets married with Charles, because she is angry with Ashley, hoping to let
32、 Ashley understand that she cares about him very much actually, which is dictated by her childish and capricious. Secondly, she also figures Charles family property, thinking she can live in a big house and go back home with splendid carriage after marriage, which is dictated by her vanity. She does not feel sad when she hears of Charles death in the war. What she is fed up with is that she must wear the mourning cloth every day and can not take part in the dance party in pub
