、study exercises answers for Seminar on Market Leader1Week 1 I was raised up in Beijing but my family were from Fujian Province. My parents speak very noticeable southern Fujian dialect. However, all of my friends here speak Putonghua with a Beijing accent. Besides, some of our neighbors here also sp

、eak dialects of other provinces. So I knew from the beginning that different people spoke differently. My parents hoped that I could learn standard Chinese well, but they also taught me Min-nan Chinese at home so that I would not lose our distinctive culture. And it was great that I could maintain a

、 secret language with my family which couldnt be understood by most of my friends. The teachers at school definitely talked Putonghua. They were always correcting us and if we use dialects at school they would deduct our performance marks. English was my first foreign language, and I learned it from

、 primary school. It was very different from Chinese in every aspect. We had to start with learning phonetic symbols and it was very difficult. After I had some knowledge of English, I began to seek for access to Japanese courses. That was much better because I liked watching Japanese cartoons and th

、e pronunciation was a little like Min-nan dialect. I once went on a trip to Japan with my sister, and I could have some conversations there in shops and with some Japanese kids. It was the first time I really felt that using another language was such a interesting thing. My friends usually said that

、 I had a wonderful voice and I was proud of that. We once did some recording of our conversation homework and I found it was funny to hear my own voice in that tape. There are some words and phrases I use repeatedly like “Oh my god” and “lovely”. I am used to call my friends “Sweetie” rather than “D

、ear”. And influenced by Min-nan dialect, there is a little accent in my own language, especially when I speak with the people from my hometown. But it is ok for me since it denotes the distinctive culture in us. Besides, Min-nan Chinese is now very prevalent in Southern-east Asia and I am proud of t

、hat.Week 2 My plan for language development for the next year is as follow, I hope it is specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-based. First, with the aim of becoming proficient enough to move around freely in a foreign country, vocabulary should be my top priority. Making flashcards i

、s said to be an effective way to learn vocabulary. I will start by searching the internet or looking through a phrasebook, and pick out some categories I want to learn. Second, I will improve my pronunciation with the help of my local friends. I also will imitate the reading tape to correct my accen

Third, I will improve my practical language competence through outwardly communicating activities like face-to-face conversations, phones and emails. I will participate in English corner

Moreover, dining, asking directions, using public transportation, and navigating through customs can be important areas where I develop my language skills. Fourth, I will develop the sales communication skills through professional

I believe teamwork will accelerate our progresses in both language and sales skills.Week 3Andrew McCarthyEvents ManagerEdinburgh Cham

、ber of Commerce19 October 20_Dear Andrew,I have read your letter. Thank you very much for your invitation about giving a talk at the merging cultures. It will be great pleasure for me to attend.I would like to give a talk to the business community at large according to the recent merger of the Savin

、gs Bank of Girona with the Scottish Savings Bank and the intercultural issues that subsequently arose. But Id like to know something more about the talk. I want to know how long will it take and the venue where the talk will be taken. Would you please tell me some further detail about the talk? Than

、k you! And I will send you a proposal for my talk.I look forward to hearing from you. Best regards,Branch Director The Savings Bank of GironaWeek 4 In modern society, technology has exerted more and more Influence on our daily life. However, modern technology also brings many damages to our society:

、 due to the so called “high-technology”, more and more people have been threated and damaged by the weapon, the environment has been ruined more and more rapidly by the modern machine. So how to understand the role of technology is a critical incident for the development of human beings. Does the te

、chnology create more problems to our society and undermine the quality of our lives, just as some people stated? Admittedly technology brings about some problems to our society and has many detrimental influences on our lives. However, I strongly disagree with the speakers contention because it over

、states the harms of technology and neglects the potential benefits that technology may create. Firstly and undoubtedly, there is no denying the fact that the technological innovations may have some baneful impact on the society and our lives. As a matter of fact, the technology may lead to some prob

、lems at the social level. The technological innovations whose consequences are controversial may lead to the confusion of the social values or ethical standard. An appropriate example is not very far to seek. The cloning technology has attracted public attention mostly because that artificial-human

、can be created the same as bio-human. And this achievement has a far-reaching influence on the social ethics. Factually, most of the countries have enacted strict laws to curb this kind of experiments. At the personal level, due to the high-speed communication media, we have to make decisions and ju

、dgments without comprehensive thinking. So this may lead to a less thoughtful and meaningful communication between people. Furthermore, we may be confused by the trial factual information every day and lose the ability to make an overall comprehension of the whole society and this makes us more mate

、rialistic and alienated from each other. Despite the merits of the speakers claim, I fundamentally disagree with the assertion because it seems to suggest that the technology cannot generate any benefit to our society but damage the quality of life. In the first place, modern social efficiency has e

、nhanced at a staggering rate and created much more wealth than any other areas. We have developed from the house-hold production to the flaw-line production and this advancement has rapidly promoted the social productivity. In the second place, with respect to the peoples daily lives, we can clearly

、 find the benefits which are brought about by the technological innovations. Nowadays, we communicate with others by the Internet and telephone, which make the communication convenient and prompt. Besides, the transporting manners which we choose today have developed from carriages to cars and plate

、s. From this perspective, we can draw the conclusion that technology bring us so many benefits and help us combat many problems. Finally and perhaps most importantly, the speaker seems to fail to take into account the fact that whether the advantages of the technology outweigh its disadvantages depe

、nds mostly on our attitudes towards it. Granted that its important to promote the social development through technology, technology accounts to more that providing convenience, it also embraces delivering truths and values. In my opinion, the genuine purpose of the technology is rooted not in stuffi

、ng information, but rather eliciting the potential of the public aimed at helping them to make a better life. From the analysis made above, I concede that technology would bring about some problems to our society and life. Nevertheless, we cannot ignore the beneficial impact that the technological i

、nnovations may have. Excessive emphasizing on the baneful influence of the technology would induce a counterproductive impact and lead to a dire consequence. In my view, its wise to admit the contribution of the technology and make good use of them for a better society.Week 5To: Director of SalesFro

、m: Kamal SatinderSubject: The Training Program for the New Data-collection SystemDear Director of Sales,I am contacting you to report the proposals for the training program for your sales team. Last month, we came to the decision that we would implement a new data-collection system since the latter

、would accelerate the integration process between the two newly merged sales forces. After that, I met with Geraldine Parker from Pollack Learning Alliance to discuss the training for the new data-collection system, and I found they were a professional team which I believe will be our wonderful colla

Therefore, I suggest you to take seriously of the external collaboration with Pollack Leaming Alliance and this proposal.I am looking

、forward to hearing from you.Best Wishes,Kamal SatinderIT Manager Week 6 I am an introvert person who has to work in a sales team. In order to have a better performance at work, I hope I can be more confident to talk in public occasion, be more sensitive to customers needs and be more important in our sales team. To fulfill theses needs, I plan the training as follow. First, there is a rehearsal session for face-to-face selling. The drama-based approach includes professional actors role-playing examples of sales encounters with different customer types. Second, there are leaderless
