Uncountable people in the world like to listen songs and sing songs. Why? From the ancient times to now, song is the carrier of emotion an
11、d has been regarded as the most simple way to express ideas and feeling. Whats more it can serve to promote language learning. Recent years haveshown an explosion of interest in using English songs for language teaching and learning. However, not everyone is proficient enough in languages that forei
12、gn to him or her. In order to comprehend the meaning and render songs, song translation comes to existence. When it comes to learning English, a lot of students are more interested in English songs than their books . Yet sometimes without the help of translated-versions of those songs, theycan not u
13、nderstand the English songs thoroughly. So for the better use of English songs not only in people listening, singing, appreciating and expressing but also in teachers language teaching and students self-study and , song translation should be constantly improved. However, song translation studies are
14、 still short for the comprehensive and more practical theories.1.1.Objectives of the ResearchSong is a kind of unique language. It has its rhyme and rhythm. The lyrics always in the form of poems, but the translation of poem is the most difficult in literature translation. Hence , song translation i

However, if we make clear of the purpose of song translation and use it as our guide to translate songs which may make it more simple and practical.So whats the purpose of song translation is should be stated at first. Firstlythe translated version should be understandable in order to ac
16、hieve thepurpose of helping the listeners to know the meaning of the original songs. At the same time, songs can be sing with the music.This thesis attempts to make a study on the Chinese translation of English songs from perspective of Skopos Theory. This thesis collected and analyzed many excellen
17、t translated English songs one by one. By doing so, the author hopes to find some underlying principles about English一Chinese song translation, most importantly, to testify the applicability of SkoposTheory to Chinese translation of English songs.1.2 Significance of the ResearchSong translation is a
18、 frontier research subject and is a complicated task. It requires the translators to have an intimate knowledge of the referenced languages, music, etc. The difficulties of song translation should not be the reason that we give up on this study. Besides, song translation plays a more and more import
19、ant role with its various functions. As Andrew B. Kelly(1987) puts it:(translating songs) improves ones knowledge of, and ear for, the pronunciation of the original an appropriate, consistent style in English; extends one understanding of the original language well beyond the limited area of “donati
20、on” into the connotative filed, a natural part of communication in a language one knows; stimulates concentration and attention to detail; teaches disciplined mental habits that enrich ones capacity for the other translation; improvecommunication by removing or helping to cross over cultural barrier

So the opinion that there is no need for translating English songs into Chinese is arguable. Some people prefer to appreciate the original songs because they in favor of t
22、he views that “much as the Chinese translation is good, the original flavor and authenticity are gone(Chen Shuiping &He Gaoda , 2009: 100), “only the source text offers the words set by the composer, with all their phonic features such as rhymes and vowel-sounds, and of course their internal meaning

And some regard the ability to sing in the original languages as a proof of their language-learning ability as well as a challenge they demand for themselves to face.Yet not everyone is a language-master. The people whose English is very poor has to practice the pronunciation a lot
24、of times. In view of the different receptors and different purposes are concerned, song translation is actual reasonable. Though English has achieved increasing popularity in china, there is still a large amount of English songs lovers whose English is not very well toappreciate the songs and make f
25、ull use of them in studying. Whats more, song translations is a branch of translation studies. Its by no means easy. A translator without enough knowledge of language, translation, music, and so on, can not do this job well.Therefore, it is of great concern and significance to apply relevant theorie
26、s to guide song translation and explore suitable methods of appropriate translation.Skopos theory proposed by Hans Vermeer offers a sound theoretical basisin this field and leads translators to conduct flexible and appropriate translation.The author hopes to fully exerted the function of song throug
27、h suitable guiding theories and reasonable methods.1.3 Difficulties and Initiatives of the ResearchSong is a kind of unique language. It has its rhyme and rhythm.
