The OscarStatuette
TheOscar statuette,designed byMGM's*chief art directorCedricGibbons,depicts*aknightholdingacrusader's*sword,standing ona reelof filmwithfivespokes, signifyingtheoriginalbranchesoftheAcademy:
Actors,Writers,Directors,Producers, andTechnicians.
Bornin1928,yearswouldpassbeforetheAcademyAwardofMerit wasofficiallynamed"Oscar".Industry insidersandmembersofthepresscalled theaward "theAcademystatuette","the goldentrophy" or"the statueof merit".Theentertainment tradepaper,WeeklyVariety,evenattemptedtopopularize"theironman".Theterm neverstuck.
Apopular storyhasbeenthatanAcademylibrarian andeventual executivedirector,Margaret Herrick,thoughtthe statuetteresembledher uncleOscar andsaidso,andthat asa resulttheAcademystaffbeganreferring toitasOscar.
Nohardevidenceexiststo supportthat tale,butinanycase,bythesixthAwards Presentation in1934,Hollywood columnistSidneySkolskyusedthe nameinhiscolumninreference to Katharine Hepburn'sfirstBestActresswin.The Academy itself didn'tusethenicknameofficiallyuntil1939.
Sinceitsconception, theOscarstatuettehas metexactinguniformstandards-with afewnotableexceptions.Inthe 1930s,juvenile playersreceived miniaturereplicas*of thestatuette;aventriloquist*EdgarBergen waspresentedwithawooden statuettewithamoveablemouth;and Walt Disney washonored withonefull-sizeand seven miniaturestatuettesonbehalf ofhisanimatedfeatureSnow WhiteandtheSevenDwarfs.Between 1942and1944,insupport ofthewareffort, Oscars weremadeof plaster.After theWar, winnersturnedin thetemporaryawardsforgoldenOscarstatuettes.
ThetraditionalOscar statuette, however,hasn'tchangedsincethe1940s,whenthebase wasmadehigher. In 1945,thebasewaschangedfrom marbleto metalandin1949,AcademyAwardstatuettesbegan tobenumbered,startingwithNo.501.
Approximately50Oscarsaremadeeach yearinChicagobythemanufacturer, R. S.Owens.Iftheydon'tmeetstrictqualitycontrol standards, thestatuettesareimmediately cutinhalf andmelteddown.
Eachaward isindividually packedintoa Styrofoam*containerslightlylargerthanashoebox.
Eightoftheseare then packedintoalargercardboardbox,andthe largeboxesareshippedtothe AcademyofficesinBeverly Hillsviaairexpress,with no identifiablemarkings.
OnMarch10, 2000,55 AcademyAwardsmysteriously vanished enroutefrom theWindyCity*totheCityofAngels. Ninedayslater,52 ofstolenstatuetteswere discoverednext to aDumpster*in theKoreatownsectionofLos Angelesby WillieFulgear,whowas laterinvitedby theAcademytoattend theOscar2000ceremoniesasaspecial guest.
Foreightdecades,theOscarshave survivedwar,weatheredearthquakes,andeven managedto escapeunscathed*fromcommon thieves.Since1995, however,R.S.Owenshasrepaired more than160statuettes."Maybesomebodyused chemicalsonthemtopolishthemand the chemicalsrubbedrightthroughthelacquer*andintothegold,"explains the companypresident."Or maybe peoplestoredthemsomeplace wherethey corroded." Althoughhestresses thatthe statuetteismadetoendure,Siegeloffers thissageadvicetoallOscarwinners:
"Ifitgetsdusty,simplywipeitwithasoftdry cloth."
