Overahundredyearsago,CharlesDickensshockedmanyofhisreaderswhenhedescribedtheconditionsunderwhichyoungchildrenworkedinBritishfactories.TheconditionsDickensdescribedcontinuealmostunchangedtodayinmanypartsoftheworld.Theonlydifferenceisthattodayemploymentofchildrenisconfinedtosmallindustriesandfamilybusinesses,suchashotels,restaurantsandparticularlyfarms,ratherthantolargefactories.

Girlssuffermorefromchildlaborpracticesthanboys.Manyofthemareforcedtostartworkwhentheyareonlytenyearsold.Althoughtheworktheyaregiventodoisoftenlight,itisoftenharmfultotheirhealth.Recently,childrenasyoungassixyearswerefoundtobeworkinginAsianfactories,andthechildrenwereworkingfromeighttofourteenhoursadayinovercrowdedandunhealthyworkingconditions.Sometimesawholefamilygroupisemployed,withthepaymentgoingtoaparentorolderrelative.Thechildrennotonlyreceivenothingorverylittlefortheirlonghoursofwork,butalsotheyarepreventedfromattendingschools.Therefore,whentheybecomeoldertheyareunabletodoanyotherkindofwork.

Thesolutiontotheproblemofchildlabourisclearlybetterlawstoprotectyoungchildren,greatersupervisionofindustryandheavierfinesforthosewhobreakthelaws.Onlyinthiswaycanyoungboysandgirlsbeallowedtoenjoythemostvaluabletimeoftheirlives-childhood.
