Forexample,inSinglish,youcaneasilyrecognizeinfluencesfromChinese,includingvocabularysuchas“MeeSiam”and“dabao”.Sentencestructureslike“toiletwhere”insteadof“where'sthetoilet”alsocomefromChinese.
Interestinganddiverseasitmayseem,thetrendforSinglishisworryingSingapore'sgovernment.Itisconcernedthatthedialectisloweringthecountry'sEnglishstandardandmayaffectitsrelationshipwithvisitors.ItevenstartedtheSpeakGoodEnglishMovement.
Unfortunately,theproblemwasnotsolved.Instead,Singlishhasboomed,especiallyamongyoungpeoplewhothinkofitasasignofbeingcoolandawayofidentifyingthemselvesasSingaporean.
