Sheiswidelyseenasproofthatgoodlookscanlastforever.But,atnearly500yearsofage,timeiscatchingupwiththeMonaLisa.
Thehealthofthefamouspicture,paintedbyLeonardodaVinciin1505,isgettingworsebytheyear,accordingtotheLouvreMuseum(卢浮宫)whereitishoused.
“Thethin,woodenpanel(画板)onwhichtheMonaLisaispaintedinoilhaschangedshapesinceexpertscheckedittwoyearsago,”themuseumsaid.Visitorshavenoticedchangesbutrepairingtheworld'smostfamouspaintingisnoteasy.ExpertsarenotsureaboutthematerialstheItalianartistusedandtheircurrentchemicalstate.
Nearly6millionpeoplegotoseetheMonaLisaeveryyear,manyattractedbythemysteryofhersmile.“Itisveryinterestingthatwhenyou'renotlookingather,sheseemstobesmiling,andthenyoulookatherandshestops,”saidProfessorMargaretLivingstoneofHarvardUniversity.“It'sbecausedirectvision(视觉)isexcellentatpickingupdetails,butlesssuitedtolookingatshadows.DaVincipaintedthesmileinshadows.”
However,theactualhistoryoftheMonaLisaisjustasmysteriousasthesmile.DaVincihimselfloveditsomuchthathealwayscarrieditwithhim,untilitwaseventuallysoldtoFrance'sKingFrancisⅠin1519.
In1911,thepaintingwasstolenfromtheLouvrebyaformeremployee,whotookitoutofthemuseum,hiddenunderhiscoat.HesaidheplannedtoreturnittoItaly.ThepaintingwassentbacktoFrancetwoyearslater.DuringWorldWarⅡ,FrenchhidthepaintinginsmalltownstokeepitoutofthehandsofGermanforces.
