Theresearchersstudiedthepersonalitiesandsocialnetworksoftwopre-schoolclassedforafullschoolyear.Oneoftheclasseswasasetofthree-year-olds,andoneasetoffour-year-olds.Childrenwhosefriendswerehard-workingoroutgoinggraduallytookonthesepersonalitytraitsovertime.Butchildrenwhosepeerswereanxiousoreasilyfrustrateddidnottakeonthesetraits.

Thenewstudyisnotthefirsttoexplorethecontagiouseffectsofpersonalitytraits.

A2015psychologystudyfoundthatrudenessatworkcanbecontagiousasittravelsfrompersontoperson“likeadisease”.ResearchersformSweden’sLundUniversityclaimedthatevenpetty(微不足道的)behavior,likenotinvitingsomeonetoacommunaleventorspreadingrumors,canstartthecycleoff.Thestudyfoundthatseeingasupervisorbeingrudetoanemployeewasenoughtocausepeopletoberudetothosearoundthem.Often,thosewhoexperiencedrudenesswouldberudetoothers.
