Learningaforeignlanguagewasoneofthemostdifficultyetmostrewardingexperiencesofmylife.Althoughattimes,learningalanguagewasfrustrating,itwaswellworththeeffort.

Myexperiencewithaforeignlanguagebeganinjuniormiddleschool,whenItookmyfirstEnglishclass.Ihadakindandpatientteacherwhooftenpraisedallofthestudents. auseofthispositivemethod,IeagerlyansweredallthequestionsIcould,neverworryingmuchaboutmakingmistakes.Iwasatthetopofmyclassfortwoyears.

WhenIwenttoseniormiddleschool,IwaseagertocontinuestudyingEnglish;however,myexperienceinseniorschoolwasverydifferentfrombefore.Whilemyformerteacherhadbeenpatientwithallthestudents,mynewteacherquicklypunishedthosewhogaveincorrectanswers.Wheneverweansweredincorrectly,shepointedalongstickatusand,shakingitupanddown,shouted,"No!

No!

No!

"Itdidn'ttakemelongtolosemyeagernesstoanswerquestions.NotonlydidIlosemyjoyinansweringquestions,butalsoItotallylostmydesiretosayanythingatallinEnglish.

However,thatstatedidn'tlastlong.WhenIwenttocollege,IlearnedthatallstudentswererequiredtotakeanEnglishcourse.Unlikemyseniormiddleschoolteacher,mycollegeEnglishteacherswerepatientandkind,andnoneofthemcarriedlong,pointedsticks!

However,thesituationwasfarfromperfect.Asourclasseswereverylarge,Iwasonlyabletoansweracoupleofquestionsineachclassperiod.Also,afterafewweeksofclasses,InoticedthereweremanystudentswhospokemuchbetterthanIdid.Ibegantofeelintimidated.So,onceagain,althoughfordifferentreasons,Iwasafraidtospeak.ItseemedmyEnglishwasgoingtostayatthesamelevelforever.

Thatwasthesituationuntilacoupleofyearslater,whenIwasofferedanopportunitytostudyEnglishthroughanonlinecourse.Thecommunicationmediumwasacomputer,phoneline,andmodem.Isoongotaccesstothenecessaryequipment,learnedthetechnologyfromafriendandparticipatedinthevirtualclassroom5to7daysaweek.

Onlinelearningisnoteasierthanregularclassroomstudy;itrequiresmuchtime,commitmentanddisciplinetokeepupwiththeflowofthecourse.Iworkedhardtomeettheminimumstandardssetbythecourseandtocompleteassignmentsontime.

Ipracticedallthetime.IcarriedalittledictionarywithmeeverywhereIwent,aswellasanotebookinwhichIlistedanynewwordsIheard.Imademany,sometimesembarrassing,mistakes.OnceinawhileIcriedwithfrustration,andsometimesIfeltlikegivingup.ButIdidn'tfeelintimidatedbystudentswhospokefasterthanIdid auseItookallthetimeIneededtothinkoutmyideasandwroteareplybeforepostingitonthescreen.Then,onedayIrealizedIcouldunderstandjustabouteverythingIcameacross,andmostimportantly,Icould"say"anythingIwantedtoinEnglish.AlthoughIstillmademanymistakesandwascontinuallylearning,Ihadfinallyreapedthebenefitsofallthathardwork.

Learningaforeignlanguagehasbeenamosttryingexperienceforme,butonethatIwouldn'ttradeforanything.Notonlydidlearninganotherlanguageteachmethevalueofhardwork,butitalsogavemeinsightsintoanotherculture,andmymindwasopenedtonewwaysofseeingthings.ThemostwonderfulresultofhavinglearnedaforeignlanguagewasthatIcouldcommunicatewithmanymorepeoplethanbefore.Talkingwithpeopleisoneofmyfavoriteactivities,sobeingabletospeakanewlanguageletsmemeetnewpeople,participateinconverions,andformnew,unforgettablefriendships.NowthatIspeakaforeignlanguage,insteadofstaringintospacewhenEnglishisbeingspoken,Icanparticipateandmakefriends.Iamabletoreachouttoothersandbridgethegapbetweenmylanguageandcultureandtheirs.

KeystoSuccessfulOnlineLearning

Whileregularschoolsstillexist,thevirtualclassroomplaysanimportantroleintoday'slearningcommunity.Jobopportunitiesforstudentsareexpandingrapidlyandmorepeopleofallagesare omingawareofonlinelearningthatallowsthemtostudyathome.Onlinestudents,however,requireuniquequalitiestobesuccessful.Thefollowinglistdiscussessomeidealqualitiesofsuccessfulonlinestudents.

1.Beopen-mindedaboutsharinglife,work,andlearningexperiencesaspartofonlinelearning.

Manydifferentpeoplefindthattheonlinemethodrequiresthemtousetheirexperiencesandthatonlinelearningoffersthemaplacetocommunicatewitheachother.Thisforumforcommunicationremovesthevisualbarriersthathindersomestudentsfromexpressingthemselves.Inaddition,studentsaregiventimetoreflectontheinformationbeforereplying.Inthisway,studentscanhelptokeeptheonlineenvironmentopenandfriendly.

2.Beabletocommunicatethroughwriting.

Inthevirtualclassroomnearlyallcommunicationiswritten,soitiscriticalthatstudentsfeelcomfortableexpressingthemselvesinwriting.Somestudentshavelimitedwritingabilitieswhichneedtobeimprovedbeforeoraspartoftheonlineexperience.Thisusuallyrequiresextracommitmentbythesestudents.Whetherworkingaloneorinagroup,studentsshareideas,perspectivesanddiscussionsonthesubjectbeingstudied,andreadaboutthoseoftheirclassmates.Inthisway,studentsgain atinsightfromtheirpeers,learningfromeachotheraswellastheinstructor.

3.Bewillingto"speakup"ifproblemsarise.

Rememberthatinstructorscannotseetheirstudentsinanonlinecourse.Thismeansstudentsmustbeabsolutelyexplicitwiththeircommentsandrequests.Iftheyexperiencetechnicaldifficulties,orproblemsinunderstandingsomethingaboutthecourse,theyMUSTspeakup;otherwisethereisnowayanyonecanknowsomethingiswrong.Ifonepersondoesnotunderstandsomething,possiblyseveralothershavethesameproblem.Ifanotherstudentisabletohelp,she/heprobablywill.Whileexplainingsomethingtoothers,studentsreinforcetheirownknowledgeaboutthesubject.

4.Taketheprogramseriously.

Onlinelearningisnoteasierthanstudyinregularclassrooms.Infact,manystudentssayitrequiresmuchmoretimeandeffort.Requirementsforonlinecoursesarenotlessthanthoseofanyqualityprogram.Successfulstudents,however,seeonlinelearningasaconvenientwaytoreceivetheireducation—notaneasierway.Manyonlinestudentssitatcomputersforhoursatatimeduringeveningsandonweekendsinordertocompletetheirassignments.Whenotherpeoplearefinishedandhavingfunismostlikelythetimewhenonlinestudentsdotheircoursework.Onlinestudentsneedtocommit4to15hoursaweekforeachcourse.

5.Acceptcriticalthinkinganddecisionmakingaspartofonlinelearning.

Onlinecoursesrequirestudentstomakedecisionsbasedonfactsaswellasexperience.Itisabsolutelynecessaryforstudentstoassimilateinformationandmaketherightdecisionsbasedoncriticalthinking.Inapositiveonlineenvironment,studentsfeelvaluedbytheinstructor,bytheirclassmatesandbytheirownwork.

6.Beabletothinkideasthroughbeforereplying.

Providingmeaningfulandqualityinputintothevirtualclassroomisanessentialpartofonlinelearning.Timeisgiventoallowforcarefuldevelopmentofanswers.Testingandchallengingofideasisencouraged.Manytimesonlinestudentswillnotalwaysberight;theyjustneedtobepreparedtoacceptachallenge.

7.Keepupwiththeprossofthecourse.

Onlinelearningisnormallysequentialandrequirescommitmentonthestudents'part.Keepingupwiththeface-to-faceclassandcompletingallworkontimeisvital.Oncestudentsgetbehind,itisalmostimpossibletocatchup.Studentsneedtowanttobethereandneedtowanttheexperience.Theinstructormayhavetocommunicatewithstudentspersonallytoofferhelpandremindthemoftheneedtokeepup.

Justasmanyexcellentinstructorsmaynotbeeffectiveonlinefacilitators,notallstudentshavethenecessaryqualitiestoperformwellonline.Peoplewhohavethequalitiesdiscussedaboveusuallymakeverysuccessfulonlinestudents.Ifyouhavethesequalities,learningonlinemaybeoneofthebestdiscoveriesyouwillevermake.
