LewisCarrollovedchildren.HebecamefriendswiththechildrenofHenryGeorgeLiddel,AliceandhersistersLorinaandEdith.Thethreelittlegirlsoftenvisitedtheyoungmathematicsteacherinhiscollegerooms.TheyspentmanyhourswithCarrol,sittingonhiscouchwhilehetoldthemfantasticstoriesaboutdreamworlds.Healsodrewpicturesforthesestories.

Duringanafternoonpicnicin1864,DodgsontoldtheLiddelchildrenastoryofAlice’sAdventuresUnderground.Alicelikeditverymuchandwhentheyreturnedhome,sheaskedhimtowriteitdownforher.Hefulfilledthelittlegirl’swishandwrotethestorydown.Heillustrated（配图）itwithhisowndrawingsandgaveittoAlice.
