LewisCarrolstudiedatRichmondSchool(1844-1845)andRugbySchool(1846-1850).In1850,hestartedstudyingatChristChurch,Oxford.Afterfinishinghisstudies,hebecameateacherofmathematicsatOxford.Apartfromteachingmathematics,healsotookphotosandwroteessaysandpoems.

LewisCarrollovedchildren.HebecamefriendswiththechildrenofHenryGeorgeLiddel,AliceandhersistersLorinaandEdith.Thethreelittlegirlsoftenvisitedtheyoungmathematicsteacherinhiscollegerooms.TheyspentmanyhourswithCarrol,sittingonhiscouchwhilehetoldthemfantasticstoriesaboutdreamworlds.Healsodrewpicturesforthesestories.

Duringanafternoonpicnicin1864,DodgsontoldtheLiddelchildrenastoryofAlice’sAdventuresUnderground.Alicelikeditverymuchandwhentheyreturnedhome,sheaskedhimtowriteitdownforher.Hefulfilledthelittlegirl’swishandwrotethestorydown.Heillustrated(配图)itwithhisowndrawingsandgaveittoAlice.
