ThehistoryoftheInternetstartsinthe1950sand1960swiththedevelopmentofcomputers.Thisbeganwithpoint-to-pointcommunicationbetweenmainframecomputersandterminals.In1982theInternetProtocolSuite(TCP/IP)wasstandardizedandtheconceptofaworld-widenetworkoffullyinterconnectedTCP/IPnetworkscalledtheInternetwasintroduced.

Sincethemid-1990stheInternethashadadrasticimpactoncultureandcommerce,includingtheriseofnearinstantcommunicationbyelectronicmail,instantmessaging,VoiceoverInternetProtocol(VoIP)"phonecalls",two-wayinteractivevideocalls,andtheWorldWideWebwithitsdiscussionforums,blogs,socialnetworking,andonlineshoppingsites.

Itisestimatedthatin1993theInternetcarriedonly1%oftheinformationflowingthroughtwo-waytelecommunication,by2000thisfigurehadgrownto51%,andby2007morethan97%ofalltelecommunicatedinformationwascarriedovertheInternet.
