Mozartwasafascinatingmusicianandcomposerwhosefamecontinuestogrowmorethantwocenturiesafterhisdeath.HewasborninSalzburg,Austria,in1756.Beforetheageoffour,hehadshowngreatmusicaltalent.Hisfatherthendecidedtolethimstarttakingharpsichordlessons.Theboy’sreputationasamusicaltalentgrewfast.Atfive,hewascomposingmusic.Formthattimeon,Mozartwasperformingnconcertsandwritingmusic.Byhisearlyteens,hehadmasteredthepiano,violinandharpsichord,andwaswritingsymphoniesandoperas.HisfirstmajoroperawasperformedinMilanin1770,whenhewasonlyfourteen.Atfifteen,MozartbecametheconductorforanorchestrainSalzburg.In1781,heleftforVienna,wherehewasingreatdemandasbothaperformerandacompositionteacher.Hisfirstoperawasasuccess.Butlifewasnoteasybecausehewasapoorbusinessman,andhisfinanceswerealwaysinabadstate.Hismusicfromthenextdecadewasnotverypopular,andheeventuallyfellbackonhisteachingjobsforaliving.In1788hestoppedperforminginpublic,preferringonlytocompose.Hediedin1791attheageofthirty-five.Althoughhelivedonlyashortlife,hecomposedover600works.

Thestoryofthesong“HappyBirthdaytoYou”Beganasasweetone,butlaterbecamebitter.Twosisters,MildredHill,ateacheratakindergarten,andDr.PattyHill,theprincipalofthesameschool,wroteasongtogetherforthechildren,entitled“GoodMorningtoAll”.WhenMildredcombinedhermusicaltalentswithhersister’sknowledgeintheareaofkindergarteneducation,‘GoodMorningtoAll”wassuretobeasuccess.Thesisterpublishedthesonginacollectionentitled“SongStoriesoftheKindergarten”in1893.Thirty-oneyearslater,afterDr.PattyHillbecametheheadoftheDepartmentofKindergartenEducationatColumbiaUniversity’sTeachersCollege,agentlemanbythenameRobertColemanpublishedthesong,withoutthesisters’permission.Headdedasecondpart,whichisthefamiliar“HappyBirthdaytoYou”.Mr.Coleman’sadditionofthesecondpartmadethesongpopularand,finally,thesisters”originalfirstpartdisappeared.“HappyBirthdaytoYou”hadaltogetherreplacedthesisters’originalsong“GoodMorningtoAll”.In1916PattytooklegalactionagainstMr.Coleman.Incourt,shesucceededinprovingthatheyweretherealownersofthesong.

Thestoryof“HappyBirthdaytoYou”wasanice,sweetoneattheverybeginning,butlaterturnedintoabitterone.Thereweretwosisters:

Thirty-oneyearslateramannamedColemanpublishedthesongwithoutthesisters’permission.Tomakethingsworse,headdedasecondpart,whichisthepresent“HappyBirthdaytoYou”.Thisnewsongsoonbecamepopularandeventuallyitreplacedthesisters’firstpartaltogether.Then,in1916,PattytooklegalactionagainstColeman.Incourtshemanagedtoprovethatsheandhersisterreallyownedthesong.
