Thehistoryoffeministmovementshasbeendividedintothree"waves"byfeministscholars.Eachdealswithdifferentaspectsofthesamefeministissues.

Thehistory,events,andstructureofthefeministmovementiscloselyrelatedtotheindividualsatthetime,specificproteststhattookplace,andthebroadertransformationstakingplaceinAmericanculture.ThefeministmovementworkedandcontinuestoworkagainstthestatusquoinAmericansociety.Accordingto,"Feminismisastruggleagainstsexistoppression.Therefore,itisnecessarilyastruggletoeradicatetheideologyofdominationthatpermeatesWesterncultureonvariouslevels,aswellasacommitmenttoreorganizingsocietysothattheself-developmentofpeoplecantakeprecedenceoverimperialism,economicexpansionandmaterialdesires."

Thefirstwomen'srightsconventionisheldinSenecaFalls,NewYork.After2daysofdiscussionanddebate,68womenand32mensignaDeclarationofSentiments,whichoutlinesgrievancesandsetstheagendaforthewomen'srightsmovement.Asetof12resolutionsisadoptedcallingforequaltreatmentofwomenandmenunderthelawandvotingrightsforwomen.

Theterm"first-wave"wascoinedretrospectivelyafterthetermbegantobeusedtodescribeanewerfeministmovementthatfocusedasmuchonfightingsocialandculturalinequalitiesasfurtherpoliticalinequalities.

In,theSuffragettescampaignedforthewomen'svote,whichwaseventuallygranted−tosomewomenin1918andtoallin1928−asmuchbecauseofthepartplayedbyBritishwomenduringthe,asoftheeffortsoftheSuffragists.IntheUnitedStatesleadersofthismovementincludedand,whoeachcampaignedfortheabolitionofslaverypriortochampioningwomen'srighttovote.Otherimportantleadersinclude,,and.Americanfirst-wavefeminisminvolvedawiderangeofwomen,somebelongingtoconservativeChristiangroups(suchasandthe),othersresemblingthediversityandradicalismofmuchof(suchasStanton,Anthony,,andthe,ofwhichStantonwaspresident).IntheUnitedStates,first-wavefeminismisconsideredtohaveendedwiththepassageofthe(1919)grantingwomentherighttovote.[]
