Climatechangeisnormallybadnewsforendangeredspecies,butinthecaseofAustralia’sGreyNurseShark,somescientistssuggestitmightactuallyhelptheirfightforsurvival.
TheGreyNurseSharkisoneofAustralia’smostcriticallyendangeredspecies.Asurveyin2002estimatedtherewerefewerthan500inthecriticallyendangeredpopulationlivingoffthecountry'seastcoast.Onthewestcoast,theyarevulnerablebutnotyetendangered.Australia’stwoGreyNurseSharkpopulationshavebeenisolatedfromeachotherformorethan100,000years.Untilnowthewatersseparatingthetwopopulationshavebeentoocoldforthesharkstocomeintocontactwitheachother.Butastemperaturesriseduetoglobalwarming,warmerwaterscouldresultinthesharksinhabitingthesameareas.Ifthesharkpopulationsunite,theextinctionriskmaybereduced.
