verb-ingformcanbeusedasanadjectiveoradverb.Itcanserveinasentenceastheattribute,thepredicativeortheobjectplement.Theverb-ingformcanbeusedtoindicatethattwoactionsarehappeningatthesametime.Ithasaperfectform.Weshouldlearntoidentifyitsfunctionsindifferentsentene.
(一)Serveastheattribute(作定语)Attributeisanounoranadjectivethatesbeforeanounanddescribesit.Ifitisaphrase,itesafterthenounitmodifies.Usuallywecanchangeitintoanattributiveclause.(作定语用的现在分词如果是单词,一般放在被修饰词的前面;如果是现在分词短语,则放在被修饰词的后面,相当于一个定语从句。

(二)Serveasthepredicative(作表语)Predicativeisanadjectivethatesafteralinkingverb.(现在分词作表语时,多表示主语所具有的特征。
一般跟在连系动词be,get,bee,look,sound,feel,keep,remain,grow,seem,appear等后面。
)如:
ThestoryIheardfromhimyesterdaysoundedveryfrightening.
我昨天从他那儿听到的故事听起来非常恐怖。

(三)Serveastheobjectplement(作宾语补足语)Anobjectplementisanadjectiveoranounthatrelatestoanddescribestheobjectsofasentence.(现在分词常可用在watch,see,hear,feel,find,get,keep,notice,have等词后面作宾语补足语。
)如:
Hekeptmewaitingforalongtime.
他让我等了很久。
Weheardsomeonesinginginthenextroom.
我们听见有人在隔壁房间里唱歌。

(四)verb-ingphrasecanbeaverb-ingonitsown.Therecanalsobeanobjectand/oradverbialaftertheverb-ing.Verb-ingphrasescanexpressthetime,thereason,theresult,andthecondition.Sometimeswecanchangeverb-ingphrasesintoadverbialclauses.(现在分词短语通常可以单独使用,也可以在其后面跟宾语和状语,用来表示时间、原因、结果、条件、方式或伴随情况等。
通常可以转换成相对应的状语从句。
