Climatronicregulatestheinteriortemperatureinlinewiththepreselectedpreferredtemperaturebymeansofautomaticadjustmentoftheblowerspeedandoperationoftheairdistributorflaps.Itthusassuresapleasantclimateinalloperatingandweatherconditions,withvirtuallydraught-freeflowofairthroughthepassengercompartment.TheClimatronicsystem’selectroniccontrolmonitorsallkeyinfluencingvariablesandsourcesofinterference,suchasthepositionofthesun,theintensityofitsraysandtheoutsidetemperature,andaddsmoreorlesscoolairaccordingly.

Thecontrolunit'sinterfacewiththeCANdatabusmakesothercomfortfeaturesavailable,too:

automaticairrecirculationwhenthewindscreenwashersareactivatedorwhenreverseisengagedshieldstheoccupantsfromunpleasantodours.Speed-dependentcontrolfortheblowerwithautomaticadjustmentoftheoutlettemperaturereducesnoiselevelswhendrivingatlowspeeds.

Climatronicalsoincludesadefrostfunctionwhichcanbeactivatedatthepushofabuttontoclearfoggedoriced-upwindows.Thisdirectsthefullairflowontotheinsideoftheglasswithahighblowersetting.Iftheoutsidetemperatureisabove2.5°C,thecoolingsystemcutsintodrytheair.

Inthisway,theClimatronicsystemfromVolkswagenimprovespassengercomfortaswellasofferingaddedconvenienceandsafety.Maintainingapleasantclimatekeepsthedriver’spowersofconcentrationandreactionssharp,bothofwhicharevitalforsafemotoring.

4MOTIONisVolkswagen’spermanentfour-wheeldrivesystem.

The4MOTIONpermanentfour-wheeldrivesystemfromVolkswagendistributestheengine’spowertoallfourwheelsasrequired.

Onmodelswheretheengineisinstalledlongitudinally,aTorsendifferentialsplitsthedriveforcebetweenthefrontandrearaxles.VehicleswithatransverseenginearefittedwiththeHaldexcoupling.

4XMOTIONistheelectronicallycontrolledpermanentfour-wheeldrivesystemintheTouareg.Thepermanentfour-wheeldrivesystemisthebasisforitsextraordinaryoff-roadcapability.TheTouaregfeaturesalockablecentredifferentialwithamulti-plateclutchandlow-rangegear.Innormaloperation,powerdistributionbetweenthefrontandrearaxlesissmoothlyadjustedasafunctionoftheamountofslip.Inaddition,thecentredifferentialcanbelockedtoproduceafixeddistributionratioofthedrivetorque.Thelow-rangegearratio(2.69:

1)forheavy-dutyoff-roaddrivingcanbeselectedelectricallyusingthechassiscontrolswitch.ThisprovidesmaximumdriveforceatlowvehiclespeedsandenablestheTouaregtotacklegradientsassteepas100percent(45°).Ifrequired,4XMOTIONcanadditionallybeorderedwitharear-axledifferentialthatproducesa100percentlockingeffectbetweentherearwheels.Thedifferentiallock(100percent)isactivatedmanuallyatthedriver’scommand.Thecross-axlelockisalsoautomaticallyactivatedaccordingtothesituationencounteredtoimprovetractionanddrivingdynamics.

Whenthedriverbrakeshardonaslipperyroadsurface,theanti-lockbrakingsystempreventsthewheelsfromlocking,sothatthevehiclecanstillbesteered.

Whenthewheelslockup,theyarenolongerabletotransmitcorneringforces,meaningthatthedriverlosescontrolofthevehicle.Topreventthisfromhappening,theABScontrolunituseswheelspeedsensorstomonitortherotationalspeedofeachwheel.Ifitdetectsthatawheelisabouttolock,asolenoidvalveintheanti-lockbrakingsystem’scontrolunitreducesthebrakepressureappliedatthewheelinquestionuntilitstartstorotatefreelyagain.Thepressureissubsequentlyincreasedtothelock-upthresholdoncemore.Thevehicleremainsstableandsteerable.
