Thewasteaccumulatedissoldtolocalrecyclingcompanies,which,thankstoJose’sefforts,payahigher-than-marketrateforeverythingbroughtinbythebankmembers.Themoneyreceivedisplacedinthepersonalaccountwheretheycollectuntilthesavingsgoalisreached.Theaccountholdercanthenwithdrawthemoney,orchoosetoleaveitandmakeitcontinuetogrowforabiggertarget.“Atthebeginning,myteachersthoughtIwascrazyorthatachildcouldnotundertakethistypeofproject,”Joserecalls.“Theydidnotunderstandthatwearenotthefutureofthecountrybutitspresent.Luckily,Ihadthesupportoftheschoolheadmasterandanassistantinmyclass.”

Theboy’seffortspaidoff,andby2013,thebankhadover200members,whobroughtinonetonofrecyclablewaste.Today,theeco-bank,whichnowhasthesupportofseverallocalinstitutions,boaststeneducationalcenters.Theyaredesignedtoteachover3,000students,aged10to18,tobecomefinanciallyindependent,usetheirmoneywisely,andhelptheenvironment.

Notsurprisingly,Jose’seffortshaveearnedhimseveralnationalandinternationalawards.OnNovember20.2018,JosewonChildren’sClimatePrize,whichcomeswithamedaland$5.500inprizemoneyandisgiventoachildoryouthwhohasaccomplishedanextraordinaryachievementfortheclimateorenvironment.
