Abstract
GonewiththeWindisoneofthemostpopularAmericannovels,whichiswrittenbyAmericanfemalewriterMargaretMitchell.Whenitwaspublished,itssalesbrokemanyrecordsamongthepublishingcircles,anditwaswildspreadinAmericanliteraryworld.Itwasalsoconsideredasaveryclassicwork.AsthefirstnovelwhichdepictsAmericanCivilWarfromwomen’sperspective,Margaretfocusesonthesufferingsfromthewarofthosewomenwhostayathomeandtheirdifficultjourneyofreconstruction.EspeciallytheleadingroleScarlettleavedagoodimpressiononthereaders.ScarlettO’Haraasthemostcriticalroleinthenovelhadthecontradictorycharacter.Scarlettwasagreatwomanwhowasrebellious,tenacity,unyieldingbutalsovanity,greedy,selfish.Shegatheredthefemininityandmasculinityqualitiesinthemeantime.Shewasacomplexanddistinctivewomen.

MargaretMunnerlynMitchell(November8,1900–August16,1949)wasborninAtlanta,Georgia,America.HisfatherwasEugeneMitchell,alawyer,andhermother,MaryIsabel“MayBelle”(or“Maybelle”)Stephens,wasasuffragist.MitchellgrewuplisteningtostoriesaboutoldAtlantaandthebattlestheconfederateArmyhadfoughtthereduringtheAmericanCivilWar.Attheageoffifteenshewroteinherjournal:
“IfIwereaboy,IwouldtryforWestPoint,ifIcouldmakeit,orwellI’dbeaprizefighter.”AftergraduatingfromWashingtonSeminary,sheattendedSmithCollege,butwithdrewduringherfreshmanyearin1918.ShereturnedtoAtlantatotakeoverthehouseholdafterhermother’sdeath.Shortlyafterward,shedefiedtheconventionsofherclassandtimesbytakingajobattheAtlantaJournal.UnderthenamePeggyMitchellshewroteaweeklycolumnforthenewspaper’sSundayedition,therebymakinghermarkasoneofthefirstfemalecolumnistsattheSouth’slargestnewspaper.Mitchell’sfirstprofessionalwritingassignmentwasaninterviewwithanAtlantasocialite,whosecouture-buyingtriptoItalywasinterruptedbytheFascisttakeover.MitchellmarriedBerrien“RedUpshaw”in1922,buttheyweredivorcedquickly.ShelatermarriedJohnMarsh,onJuly4,1925.From1922to1926,Mitchellwrotedozensofarticles,interviews,sketches,andbookreviews,includinginterviews.MitchellisreportedtohavebegunwritingGonewiththeWindwhilebedriddenwithabrokenankle.Sheoriginallycalledtheheroine“PansyO’Hara”,andTarawas“FontenoyHall”.ShealsoconsiderednamingthenovelTotetheWearyLoadorTomorrowIsanotherDay.ShecompletedtheworkinMarch1936.AndshereceivedthePulitzerPrizeforFictionforthebookin1937.AlthoughGonewiththeWindbroughtMitchellfameandatremendousfortune,itseemstohavebroughtlittlejoy.Chasedbythepressandpublic,theauthorandherhusbandlivedmodestlyandtraveledrarely.Thebookwasadaptedintoa1939AmericanFilm.GonewiththeWindistheonlynovelbyMitchellpublishedduringherlifetime.
