Quarrythegraniterockwithrazors,ormoorthevesselwithathreadofsilk,

thenmayyouhopewithsuchkeenanddelicateinstrumentsashumanknowledge

andhumanreasontocontendagainstthosegiants,thepassionandtheprideofman.

“Packing”aPerson

keacommodity,needspackaging.Butgoingtoofarisabsolutelyundesirable.Alittleexaggeration,however,doesnoharmwhenitshowsthequequalitiestotheiradvantage.Todisplaypersonalcharminacasualandnaturalway,itisimportantforonetohaveaclearknowledgeofoneself.ckagerknowshowtointegrateartandnaturewithoutanytracesofembellishment,sothatthepersonsopackagedisnocommoditybutahumanandlovely.Ayoungperson,especiallyafemale,radiantwithbeautyandfulloflife,hasallthefavorgrantedbyGod.Anyattempttomakeupwouldating.Youth,however,comesandgoesinamomentofdoze.Packagingforthemiddle-agedisprimarilytoconcealthefurrowsploughedbytime.njoylife'sexuberanceenoughtoretainself-confidenceandpursuepioneeringwork,youareuniqueinyournaturalqualities,andyourcharmandmain.Elderlypeoplearebeautifuliftheirriveroflifehasbeen,throughplains,mountainsandjungles,runningitscourseasitshould.Youhaveyourlifewhichnowarrivesatacomplacentstageofserenityindifferenttofameorwealth.Thereisnoneedtoresorttohair-dyeing;thedmountainisitselfabeautifulsceneoffairyland.Letyourlookschangefromyoungtooldsynchronizingwiththenaturalageingprocesssoastomonywithnature,forharmonyitselfisbeauty,whiletheotherwayroundwillonlyendinunpleasantness.Tobeintheelder'scompanyislikeickbookofdeluxeeditionthatfascinatesonesomuchastobereluctanttopartwith.Aslongasonefindswhereonestands,oneknowshowtoeself,justasacommodityestablishesitsbrandbytherightpackaging.

Passage3.ThreePassionsIHaveLivedfor

Threepassions,simplebutoverwhelminglystrong,havegovernedmylife:

thelongingforlove,thesearchforknowledge,

andunbearablepityforthesufferingofmankind.

Thesepassions,likegreatwinds,haveblownmehitherandthither,

inawaywardcourseoveradeepoceanofanguish,

reachingtotheveryvergeofdespair.

Ihavesoughtlove,first,becauseitbringsecstasy

—ecstasysogreatthatIwouldoftenhavesacrificedalltherestofmylife

forafewhoursforthisjoy.

Ihavesoughtit,next,becauseitrelievesloneliness

—thatterriblelonelinessinwhichoneshiveringconsciousness

looksovertherimoftheworldintothecoldunfathomablelifelessabyss.

Ihavesoughtit,finally,becauseintheunionofloveIhaveseen,

inamysticminiature,

theprefiguringvisionoftheheaventhatsaintsandpoetshaveimagined.

ThisiswhatIsought,andthoughitmightseemtoogoodforhumanlife,

thisiswhat—atlast—Ihavefound.

WithequalpassionIhavesoughtknowledge.

Ihavewishedtounderstandtheheartsofmen.

Ihavewishedtoknowwhythestarsshine...

Alittleofthis,butnotmuch,Ihaveachieved.

Loveandknowledge,sofarastheywerepossible,ledupwardtowardtheheavens.

Butalwayspitybroughtmebacktoearth.

Echoesofcriesofpainreverberateinmyheart.

Childreninfamine,victimstorturedbyoppressors,helplessoldpeople

—ahatedburdentotheirsons,

andthewholeworldofloneliness,poverty,andpainmakeamockeryofwhathumanlifeshouldbe.

Ilongtoalleviatetheevil,butIcannot,andItoosuffer.

Thishasbeenmylife.

Ihavefounditworthliving,andwouldgladlyliveitagain

ifthechancewereofferedme.

Passage4.ALittleGirl

Sittingonagrassygrave,beneathoneofthewindowsofthechurch,wasalittlegirl.

Withherheadbentbackshewasgazingupattheskyandsinging,

whileoneofherlittlehandswaspointingtoatinycloud

thathoveredlikeagoldenfeatheraboveherhead.

Thesun,whichhadsuddenlybecomeverybright,shiningonherglossyhair,

gaveitametallicluster,anditwasdifficulttosaywhatwasthecolor,darkbronzeorblack.

Socompletelyabsorbedwassheinwatchingthecloudtowhichherstrangesongorincantationseemedaddressed,thatshedidnotobservemewhenIroseandwenttowardsher.

Overherhead,highupintheblue,

alarkthatwassoaringtowardsthesamegauzycloudwassinging,asifinrivalry.

AsIslowlyapproachedthechild,

Icouldseebyherforehead,whichinthesunshineseemedlikeaglobeofpearl,

andespeciallybyhercomplexion,thatsheuncommonlylovely.

Hereyes,whichatonemomentseemedblue-gray,atanotherviolet,

wereshadedbylongblacklashes,curvingbackwardinamostpeculiarway,

andthesematchedinhuehereyebrows,

andthetressesthatweretossedabouthertenderthroatwerequiveringinthesunlight.

AllthisIdidnottakeinatonce;

foratfirstIcouldseenothingbutthosequivering,glittering,changefuleyesturnedupintomyface.Graduallytheotherfeatures,especiallythesensitivefull-lippedmouth,

grewuponmeasIstoodsilentlygazing.

Hereseemedtomeamoreperfectbeautythanhadevercometomeinmyloveliestdreamsofbeauty.Yetitwasnotherbeautysomuchasthelookshegavemethatfascinatedme,meltedme.

Passage5DeclarationofIndependence

WhenintheCourseofhumanevents,

itbecomesnecessaryforonepeopletodissolvethepoliticalbands

whichhaveconnectedthemwithanother,

andtoassumeamongthepowersoftheearth,

theseparateandequalstationtowhichtheLawsofNatureandofNature'sGodentitlethem,

adecentrespecttotheopinionsofmankind

requiresthattheyshoulddeclarethecauseswhichimpelthemtotheseparation.

Weholdthesetruthstobeself-evident,thatallmenarecreatedequal,

—ThatwheneveranyFormofGovernmentbecomesdestructiveoftheseends,

itistheRightofthePeopletoalterortoabolishit,

andtoinstitutenewGovernment,

layingitsfoundationonsuchprinciplesandorganizingitspowersinsuchform,

astothemshallseemmostlikelytoeffecttheirSafetyandHappiness.

Prudence,indeed,willdictatethatGovernmentslongestablished

shouldnotbechangedforlightandtransientcauses;

andaccordinglyallexperiencehasshown,

thatmankindaremoredisposedtosuffer,whileevilsaresufferable,

thantorightthemselvesbyabolishingtheformstowhichtheyareaccustomed.

Butwhenalongtrainofabusesandusurpations,

pursuinginvariablythesameObjectevincesadesigntoreducethem

underabsoluteDespotism,itistheirright,itistheirduty,

tothrowoffsuchGovernment,andtoprovidenewGuardsfortheirfuturesecurity.

—SuchhasbeenthepatientsufferanceoftheseColonies;

andsuchisnowthenecessitywhichconstrainsthemtoaltertheirformerSystemsofGovernment.
