4,000yearsago,thecommonlyusedwordsfor“toread”literallymeant“tocryout”or“tolisten".Buttoday,silentreadingisthenorm.Themajorityofusbottlethewordsinourheadsasifsittinginaquietlibrary.Readingoutloudislargelykeptforbedtimestoriesandperformances.

However,agrowingbodyofresearchsuggeststhatwemaybemissingoutbyreadingonlywiththevoicesinsideourminds.Theancientartofreadingaloudhasanumberofbenefitsforadults,fromhelpingimproveourmemoriesandunderstandcomplextexts,tostrengtheningemotionalbondsbetweenpeople.ColinMacLeod,apsychologistattheUniversityofWaterlooinCanada,hasresearchedtheimpactofreadingaloudonmemory.Heandhiscolleagueshaveshownthatpeopleconsistentlyrememberwordsandtextsbetteriftheyreadthemaloudthaniftheyreadthemsilently.Theeffectofreadingaloudisparticularlystronginchildren,butitworksforolderpeople,too.MacLeodhasnamedthisphenomenonthe“productioneffect”.Itmeansthatproducingwrittenwords-that'stosay,readingthemoutloud-improvesourmemoryofthem.

Theproductioneffecthasbeenreplicatedinnumerousstudiesformorethanadecade.In

onestudyinAustralia,agroupofseven-to-ten-year-oldswerepresentedwithalistofwordsandaskedtoreadsomesilently,andothersaloud.Afterwards,theycorrectlyrecognised87%ofthewordsthey'dreadaloud,butonly70%ofthesilentones.

Inanotherstudy,adultsaged67to88weregiventhesametask-readingwordseithersilentlyoraloud-beforethenwritingdownallthosetheycouldremember.Theywereabletorecall27%ofthewordstheyhadreadaloud,butonly10%ofthosethey'dreadsilently.Whenaskedwhichonestheyrecognised,theywereabletocorrectlyidentify80%ofthewordstheyhadreadaloud,butonly60%ofthesilentones.MacLeodandhisteamhavefoundtheeffectcanlastuptoaweekafterthereadingtask.
