上节我们没有讨论完的话题接着讨论，我把下节课的组讨论内容发给大家，每一组请大家自由组合，每组3-4人为好。
讨论从艾略特的改革开始，上面的文字是我想让大家看的，不需要讨论。
问题如下：

据说，在每个哈佛人的一生中，都会出现这样的时刻，他或她突然意识到哈佛的魅力。
我想很多人的那个瞬间是在拿到长达上千页的选课单，为自己选择在哈佛的第一门课的时候。
剩下1/4则是通识课（generaleducation）。
所谓通识课程，就是学校提供给本科生的一系列基础课程，学生必须从中选出几门作为必修课，无论他们的专业或兴趣为何。
在哈佛，主修课可以任意选、任意换，连专业也可以换，唯有通识课属于校方指定必修的，非选不可。
这是大学主动为一个年轻人的四年求学生涯开出的一张关键处方，代表了一所大学对于知识与教育最基本的哲学与态度：
一个人在大学期间应该学些什么？
什么知识或方法是每个学生都应掌握的？
大学最希望培养的是什么样的人？
比如哥伦比亚大学认为有些书是每个人毕业之前都应该读过的，不是任何一本书，而必须是荷马、柏拉图、索福克勒斯、奥古斯丁、康德、黑格尔、马克思、伍尔夫的著作……为什么？
因为这些是最戏剧性地建构了“西方”的著作者，他们的书是一些最直接的涉及什么是人以及人可以是什么的书。
它们应该成为每个人的教养的一部分。
自由选修制：
艾略特的改革
对本科生的教学上，艾略特采取的是最放任自由的一种方式——将所有的课程向所有的学生开放，取消一切必修课程，让学生完全根据兴趣选择学习内容。
因为他相信，19或20岁的年轻人应该知道他们最喜欢什么，最适合学习什么。
即使无所爱，至少也应该有所恶。
硬把一个学生推向他没有能力或者没有兴趣的领域去学习是愚蠢的。
在他上任之前，哈佛学生的学习选择权微乎其微。
科目大部分是必修课，唯一可选的只有自然科学与现代语文。
如果你想选修拉丁文，无论上大学时拉丁文有多好，都必须等到三年级——就因为那是为三年级学生准备的课程。
1909年，当他40年的校长生涯走到尽头时，必修课只剩下了一年级新生的英语写作课和外语课，二、三、四年级的学生可以完全自由地选择课程。
