Well,everybody’sexperienceisverydifferent.Thereareafewguidelinesyoucanfollowforeachofyourfouryears.Freshmanyear,don’tworrytoomuchaboutyourcareerplans.Trylotsofactivities,getyourfeetwetoncampusandtakeseveraldifferentclassestoseewhatitisyoumostenjoy.
Sophomoreyearisthetimetonarrowdownyouracademicfocusanddecideonacollegemajor.Youalsowanttonarrowyouroptionsintermsofyourextracurricularactivitiestofocusonyourbiggestcommitments.AndfinallyIrecommendgettingaprofessionalinternshipthesummerbetweenyoursophomoreandjunioryearstostarthavingprofessionalexperienceyou’llbeabletolistonarésumé.
Junioryearisatimetotakeonleadershippositionsintheextracurricularactivitiesthatyou’vechosen.It’salsoreallyimportanttogetyourGPAaboveabecausethat’sthecut-offformanyemployerstogiveyouajob.Andfinallyifyouhaven’tdoneaninternshipalready,it’sessentialtohaveatleastoneonyourrésumébytheendofyourjunioryear.
Duringyoursenioryear,yourgoalshouldbetofindabalanceamongtheleadershippositionsyou’vetakenoninyourextracurricularactivities,keepingupyourgradepointaverageinyourcollegemajorandfocusingonthejobsearchforapositionaftergraduation.

SowhatdoesCambridgehavetoofferyouTopratedteachingbytop-ratedlecturers.Youareoftenbeingtaughtbythepersonwhowrotethetextbookthatyouarestudyingfrom.Youarenotjustbeinglecturedbythem.Wehaveasystemcalledsupervisionshere,whichissmallgroup,oftentimesone-on-oneteaching.Withthesepeoplewhoareworldexpertsintheirfield,it’syourchancetodiscussyourideaswiththem.Itmaybethatyouhavereallyreallystrongopinions,andyouwanttogetthatacrossandtohavethatchancetodiscussitwithsomebodywhoistheleadingexpertofthefield.Itmightsoundquitedaunting,butit’sveryrewardingexperiences.It’soneofthebestthingsofbeingaCambridge.
Ourcoursesroughlyfallintoarts,sciencesandsocialsciences,buteachcourseisveryindividual.Youneedtomakesurethatyouarestudyingtherightsubjectsthatprovidethefactivepreparationforthatcourse.Theyaretraditionalcourses,andthat’sthereasonwhyyouneedtomakesureyouaredoingtherightsubjectsforthem.Somakesurethatyoucheckintheperspectivesoronthewebsites.Allofthecoursesstartverybroadly,andthentheynarrowinfocus.Soinyoufirstyear,youdoabitofeverything,yougetagoodgroundingandeverythingforyoutochoosewhereyouwanttofocus.Itmeansthatyoucanmakethatdecisionwithgoodknowledgeandagoodgroundinginyoursubjectasawhole.

30yearsago,studentsdidalltheirlearninginsideofaclassroomandgotalloftheirinformationfromencyclopedias,libraries,anddictionaries.Today,studentscandownloadanE-bookinlessthanaminute,searchforanythinginseconds,andfindanytopiconWikipediainstantly.Technologyisopeninguptheworldofeducation.Butthereisaproblem.Today,intheUS,astudentdropoutofhighschoolinevery26seconds.30%studentsintheUSfailoutofhighschool,andofUScollegestudents46%willnotgraduate.
Currently,educationisaone-size-fits-allmodel.Visuallearners,audiolearnersandhands-onlearnersarerequiredtolearninwaysthatdon’talwaysbestfittheirneeds.Weneedasystemthatadaptstoourstudents,nottheotherwayaround.Today,technologyallowsforacustomizablesystemthatcanbetailoredtoindividualstudents.Inwhatusedtobeaworldconfinedtoaclassroom,studentsarenowabletolearnanywhere,whetherthat’sathome,atthelocalcoffeeshop,halfwayaroundtheworld,oranywherethatsuitstheirneeds.
Withthefutureofdigitaleducation,wecanalsoexpectmoreblendedlearningwithcoursesthatincorporateonlineteachingintoaclassroomenvironment.Therewillbemoretextbooksavailableindigitalformats.Infact,it’sestimatedthatby2016,30%oftextbookswillbeboughtinadigitalformat,andtherewillbemorecollaborationbetweenpeoplefrommanypartsoftheworld.UScollegeseducate19millionstudentseveryyear,and96%ofthoseuniversitiesofferatleastoneonlineclass.Thefutureofdigitaleducationisnow.Andwehavebeendoingitonlinesincethemid-80s,withmorethan415onlineclassesand18fulldegrees.
