TheArcticsea-ice,asmeasuredatitssmallestinSeptember,isreducingatarateofabout14%pertenyears,whichislikelyreducingpolarbears’approachtoseals.What’smore,theirsituationcouldbeworsenedbytheneedtochangehuntingstrategieswiththeseasons.

Inthespring,theresearchersexplainedpolarbearsaremostlyhuntingforyoungseals.Butlaterintheyear,afterthebears’longsummerfeast(盛宴),thoseyoungsealsareolderandwiser,meaningpolarbearsarenotabletocatchasmany.“It’sthoughtthatbearsmightcatchacouplepermonthinthefall,comparedto5to10permonthinthespringandearlysummer,”Mr.Paganosaid.“Wenowhavethetechnologytolearnhowtheyaremovingontheice,theiractivitypatterns,andtheirenergyneeds,sowecanbetterunderstandtheimplications(启示)ofthesechangesweareseeinginthesea-ice.”
