StudentswhoentertheCuriosityChallengeandareselectedaswinnerswillbehonoredataspecialceremonyduringtheCSFonSunday,April21st.Guestspeakerswillalsopresentprizestothestudents.Winningentrieswillbepublishedinabook.Studententrieswillexhibitedandprizeswillbegiven.Familiesofthosewhotakepartwillbeincludedincelebrationandbrunchwillbeserved.

Almosteverymachinewithmovingpartshaswheels,yetnooneknowsexactlywhenthefirstwheelwasinventedorwhatitwasusedfor.Wedoknow,however,thattheyexistedover5,500yearsagoinancientAsia.
Theoldestknowntransportwheelwasdiscoveredin2002inSlovenia.Itisover5,100yearsold.Evidencesuggeststhatwheelsfortransportdidn'tbecomepopularforawhile,though.Thiscouldbebecauseanimalsdidaperfectlygoodjobofcarryingfarmingtoolsandhumansaround.
Butitcouldalsobebecauseofadifficultsituation.Whilewheelsneedtorollonsmoothsurfaces,roadswithsmoothsurfacesweren'tgoingtobeconstructeduntiltherewasplentyofdemandforthem.Eventually,roadsurfacesdidbecomesmoother,butthisdifficultsituationappearedagainafewcenturieslater.Therehadbeennoimportantchangesinwheelandvehicledesignbeforethearrivalofmodemroaddesign.
Inthemid-1700s,aFrenchmancameupwithanewdesignofroad—abaselayer(层)oflargestonescoveredwithathinlayerofsmallerstones.AScotsmanimprovedonthisdesigninthe1820sandastrong,lastingroadsurfacebecameareality.Ataroundthesamelime,metalhubs(thecentralpartofawheel)cameintobeing,followedbythepneumatictyre(充气轮胎)in1846.Alloywheelswereinventedin1967,sixtyyearsaftertheappearanceoftarmackedroads(柏油路).Aswheeldesigntookoff,vehiclesgotfasterandfaster.

ThreeCentralTexasmenwerehonoredwiththeTexasDepartmentofPublicSafety'sDirector'sAwardinaTuesdaymorningceremonyfortheirheroisminsavingthevictimsofaserioustwocaraccident.

Bongewasthefirstonthesceneandheardchildrenscreaming.HebrokethroughabackwindowandpulledMallorySmith,10,andhersister,MeganSmith,9,fromthewreckage.
Thegirl'smother,BeckieSmith,wasnotwiththematthetimeofthewreck,astheyweretravelingwiththeirbodysitter,LisaBowbin.
BeckieSmithstillremembersthesickeningfeelingshehaduponreceivingthecallinformingherofthewreckandthedespairasshedrovetothescene.
BozemanandClemmonsarrivedshortlyafterBongeandhelpedrescuetheothervictimsandattemptedtoputoutthefires.
“Iwasnervous,”Bozemansaid.“Idon'tfeellikeI'mahero.Iwasjustdoingwhatanyoneshoulddointhatsituation.Ihopesomeonewoulddothesameforme.”
Everyoneattheaccidentmadeitoutalive,withthevictimssufferingfromnonlifethreateninginjuries.MallorySmithbrokebothfemurs,andMeganhadneckandbackinjuries.Bowbinisstillrecoveringfromabrokenpelvis,ankleandfoot.
Therescuersalsoweretakentothehospitalandtreatedforcutsandsmokebreathing,Bongesaid.
Inaddition,BozemangottomeetaccidentvictimAnthonyRussointhehospitalaftertheaccident,whereRussopresentedhimwithaglassframeinscribedwith“Thankyou”,Bozemansaid.ThoseinvolvedinthatfatefulencounteronHighway6creditedGodblessingforbringingthemtogether.
