Blueholesgettheirnamefromthecolorsomehavewhenseenfromtheair.Thecolorisusuallyareflectionoftheskyonthewater.Butnotallofthesecavesystemshavebluesurfaces.Somecontaindarkormuddywater.

Blueholesaretheresultoferosion（侵蚀）inwhichwaterbreaksdownrock.Rainfallingthousandsofyearsagocontainedchemicalswhichslowlyworeawayatthelimestone（石灰岩）landmass.Theseholeswerelaterfilledwithseawaterasthesealevelchanged.Therisingandfallingofsealevelsandthemixtureofsaltandfreshwaterfurtherworeawayatthesecaveformations.Blueholesarevertical（垂直的）caves.Buttheycanalsohavehorizontalcaveformationsthatmaybehundredsofmeterslong.

Thesefloodedcavesystemscanbefoundintheocean，ortheycanbefoundinland.Oceancavesareaffectedbytides，sotheyalwayshavewatermovement.Butblueholesonlandareverystill.Theyhaveseverallayersofwater，chemicals，andbacteria.Thetoplayeroffreshwatercomesfromrainfall.Thislayeractslikeacapontopofthelayeredmixture，andkeepsoutoxygenfromtheatmosphere.Thefreshwaterfloatsonadenser（浓密的）layerofsaltwater.Underneaththisisalayerofpoisonoushydrogensulfide（硫化氢），producedbybacterialivinginthewater.Underneaththislayerisanoxicseawater，whichdoesnotcontainanyoxygen.

Underwatercavesareprobablyoneoftheleastexploredecosystemsontheplanet.Onereasonblueholeshavenotbeenfullyexploredisthattheycanbeextremelydangerous.Therearemanysafetyrulesthatdiversmustfollowtohelpensuretheirsurvival.
