Blueholesgettheirnamefromthecolorsomehavewhenseenfromtheair.Thecolorisusuallyareflectionoftheskyonthewater.Butnotallofthesecavesystemshavebluesurfaces.Somecontaindarkormuddywater.

Blueholesaretheresultoferosion(侵蚀)inwhichwaterbreaksdownrock.Rainfallingthousandsofyearsagocontainedchemicalswhichslowlyworeawayatthelimestone(石灰岩)landmass.Theseholeswerelaterfilledwithseawaterasthesealevelchanged.Therisingandfallingofsealevelsandthemixtureofsaltandfreshwaterfurtherworeawayatthesecaveformations.Blueholesarevertical(垂直的)caves.Buttheycanalsohavehorizontalcaveformationsthatmaybehundredsofmeterslong.

Thesefloodedcavesystemscanbefoundintheocean,ortheycanbefoundinland.Oceancavesareaffectedbytides,sotheyalwayshavewatermovement.Butblueholesonlandareverystill.Theyhaveseverallayersofwater,chemicals,andbacteria.Thetoplayeroffreshwatercomesfromrainfall.Thislayeractslikeacapontopofthelayeredmixture,andkeepsoutoxygenfromtheatmosphere.Thefreshwaterfloatsonadenser(浓密的)layerofsaltwater.Underneaththisisalayerofpoisonoushydrogensulfide(硫化氢),producedbybacterialivinginthewater.Underneaththislayerisanoxicseawater,whichdoesnotcontainanyoxygen.

Underwatercavesareprobablyoneoftheleastexploredecosystemsontheplanet.Onereasonblueholeshavenotbeenfullyexploredisthattheycanbeextremelydangerous.Therearemanysafetyrulesthatdiversmustfollowtohelpensuretheirsurvival.

First,diversmusthavetrainingandexperiencetoswiminthesecaves.Thosewhoexploreacaveforthefirsttimemustestablishathinropecalledaguideline.Thislinehelpsthemtosafelyenterandexitthecavewithoutgettinglost.Theymustalsobringseverallightsourcesincaseonefails,andbringmorethanonesetofbreathingequipmentincaseonedevicefails.Meanwhile,theymustpaycarefulattentiontotheirairsupply.Theruleistouseathirdoftheirairtoenterthecave,athirdtoexit,andathirdforemergencies.

Therearemanydifficultiesinvolvedindivinginblueholes.Insomeblueholesdiversmustquicklyswimthroughalayerofhydrogensulfidetoreachthehorizontalcavesfurtherdown.Thisgascausesitchyskin,dizziness,andinhighenoughquantities,death.Or,diversmightfaceextremelystrongcurrentsthatcansuckthemintoanopening.Iftheyarenotcarefulwiththeirmovementstheycancausedisorderintheareaofacave,creatingexplosionsofsilt(淤泥)whichmakesitimpossibletoseeclearly.

Formostexplorers,though,thepossibilityofdiscoveryinthesecaveenvironmentsmakestheexperienceworththerisk.Youcanjumpintowhatlookslikeaninsignificantlittleholeintheground,andcomeoutwithinformationthat’sofvaluetomanydifferentdisciplines.ScientistsareinterestedinthesecavesbecauseoxygenfreeconditionstherearesimilartothoseonEarthlongago,beforeoxygenexistedonourplanet,aswellassimilartospace.
