KatherineMansfield,pennameofKathleenMansfieldMurry,wasaprominentNewZealandmodernistwriterofshortfiction.ShewasborninWellington,NewZealandin1888.WhenshewasstudingatQueensColloge,London,shemetD.H.LawrenceandJohnMiddleonMurry,afamouscritic,whomshelatermarried.Mansfield’sfamilymemoirswerecollectedinBliss,whichsecuredherreputationasawriter.Inthenexttwoyears,shedidherbestwork,thepeakofherachievementbeingtheGardenParty,whichshewroteduringthefinalstagesofherillness.Shediedoftuberculosisin1923.Mansfield’screativeyearswereburdenedwithloneliness,illness,jealousy,allofwhichwerereflectedinherworkswiththebitterdepictionofmaritalandfamilyrelationshipsofhermiddle-classcharacters.Hershortstorieswerealsonotablefortheiruseofstreamofconsciousness.
