Afterdiscoveringthis，thescientistsexperimentedfurtherbyaddingacetatetothesoilofotherplants,beforetheystoppedgivingthemwatercompletely.Afterleavingtheplantsfor14days，theyfoundthattheonestreatedwithacetatehadsurvived，whiletheuntreatedplantshaddriedupanddied.It’shopedthatthissimplemethodofsurvivalcouldsoonbeusedtohelpfarmersindrycountrieskeeptheircropsalive.

JongMyongKim，co-authorofthestudy，tellsPopularSciencemagazinethathe’salreadybeenintouchwithpeopleallovertheworldwhoareinterestedintryingthissimpleandcost-effectivemethodoutforthemselvesfromflowergrowingcompaniestoamateur（业余）gardeners.Althoughatthispointkeepingthirstyplantsaliveisn’taseasyasjustpouringvinegaroverthem，Kimsaysheandhisteamareworkingonmakingtheprocessassimpleaspossible.“Nowwearetryingtocooperatewithsomefarmers，andalsosomecompanies，tomakeamethodtoapplythissystem，”hesays.
