Afterdiscoveringthis,thescientistsexperimentedfurtherbyaddingacetatetothesoilofotherplants,beforetheystoppedgivingthemwatercompletely.Afterleavingtheplantsfor14days,theyfoundthattheonestreatedwithacetatehadsurvived,whiletheuntreatedplantshaddriedupanddied.It’shopedthatthissimplemethodofsurvivalcouldsoonbeusedtohelpfarmersindrycountrieskeeptheircropsalive.

JongMyongKim,co-authorofthestudy,tellsPopularSciencemagazinethathe’salreadybeenintouchwithpeopleallovertheworldwhoareinterestedintryingthissimpleandcost-effectivemethodoutforthemselvesfromflowergrowingcompaniestoamateur(业余)gardeners.Althoughatthispointkeepingthirstyplantsaliveisn’taseasyasjustpouringvinegaroverthem,Kimsaysheandhisteamareworkingonmakingtheprocessassimpleaspossible.“Nowwearetryingtocooperatewithsomefarmers,andalsosomecompanies,tomakeamethodtoapplythissystem,”hesays.
