AspectreishauntingthePeople’sRepublicofChina---thespectreofEnglish.Studentandteacher,bossandworker,taxidriverandtaxipassengeralikehavejoinedtogetherinadesperatealliancetounderstand,toovercome,toemploy,toprofitfromthechallengesposedbythisspectre.Althoughthespectrehasaname--“English”--
it,likeperfume,isbutasignaturescentofsomethingmuchgreater,muchdarker,andaboveall,imminent,unseen,andthreatening.Itisaharbingerofchangesalreadywithintheseancientshores,followedbygreaterandgreaterchanges,challenges,setbacks,profits,disasters,triumphs,retrenchment,destiny.Tocallwhatistofollow“globalization”or“full-spectrumdominance”wouldbeatragicsimplification,foritismuch,muchmorethanthat.Awave,afloodofchangeandchallengeisabouttoengulfthiscountry.Indeed,ithasalreadystarted--andpeopleareanxiousanddisturbed.
