AsProfessorOatleypointsout，ouremotionshaveveryimportantfunctions，forexample，fear.Ifwecrosstheroadandacarapproaches，weusuallystopmovingorstepback.Westopwhatwearedoing，checkwhatwehavedoneandpayverycarefulattentiontotheenvironment.Theemotionoffearmakesustakethissmallseriesofactionswhich，onaverage，helppreserveoursafety.

Ontheotherhand，ifthingsaregoingwellandsmallproblemscomeup，wefindwecansolvethemwiththeresourceswehavetohand.Asaconsequence，wetendtofeelhappyandusuallycontinuedoingthejob.

Angerisanemotionthattendstooccurwhensomeoneispreventingusfromdoingsomething.Thenthissmall“kit”ofreactionsenablesustoprepareourselvestobequiteaggressivetothatperson，ortotryharder，andsoon.

ProfessorOatleybelievesemotionsgenerallyoccurattheseimportantmomentsinactions.Withfearandangerouremotionsmakeusdecidetostartdoingsomethingelse，whilewithhappinessthey“suggest”wecontinuewhatwearealreadydoing.
