Happinessisnotwhatmoststudentshaveinmindwhentheythinkofschool.YetaschoolinGermanyhasdevelopedanovelwaytoraisethemoraleofitsstudents,byteachinghappinessinclasses.StudentsatHeidelberg’sWillyHellpachSchoolofEconomicsarelearninghowtoachievehappinessasanofficialsubject,alongsidemathematicsandlanguages.ThisisthefirstschoolinGermanytodevelopahappinesscourse,intendedfor17-to19-year-oldspreparingforuniversityentranceexams.

ErnstFritz-Schubert,theschool’sprincipal,isonamissiontochangethings.

Itwasmyidea-I’vebeenatthisschoolfor31years,andIfeelthatschoolandhappinesshavetobereunited.Thesearetwotermswhicharenotconsideredtogether,becauseonedoesnotconnectschoolwithhappiness.Insomecasesschoolcomesbehindthedentistsonthepopularityscaleandweshouldtrytopushschools’popularityabit.

Ithasbeenprovedbysciencethatahappystudentcanlearnmorethananunhappyone,Unhappystudentscanconcentrateforawhilebutdonotusealltheirpotential.Thehappinessclassesareintendedtohelpstudentsfulfilltheirpotential.Theywillhelpthestudentslivehappyandprosperouslives.

Theclassesaimtohelpstudentsinachievingapositivestateofmind,byusingalltheirownresourcesandboostingtheirself-esteem.Inaddition,theyhopeclasseswillincreaseself-awarenessandphysicalcomfort.Happinessclassesarealsointendedtomakestudentsmoreawareabouttheirenvironmentandsocietyasawhole.Duringclassesstudentsareencouragedtoexpressthemselvesandobservetheirpeers’behavior.TheclassesaretaughtbyBjoernBonn,anactorandvisitinglecturer.
