ThisfilmisatruestorybasedontheexperiencesofHustlerMagazinePublisherLarryFlynt.FlyntgrewuppoorinthestateofKentucky,butsoonfoundsomesuccessrunningabarandclubinthecityofCincinnati,Ohio.Theclubwasknownforwomenwhodancednakedonstage,andforFlynt,

itwasagoodwaytomakealiving.

Inthemid1970s,Flyntbegantopublishanewsletterforhisbusiness,andsoonturnedthatintothefirstissueofHustler,whichquicklybecameknownasoneofthemostsexuallyexplicitandshockingmagazinesinthecountry.WithhelpfromhiswifeAlthea,andbrotherJimmy,LarrybecametherichestpornographerinAmerica,andasymboloffilth,excessand"badtaste."

AsHustler'ssuccessgrew,Larrysoonfoundhimselfinconstantlegaltrouble.Communitiesaroundthecountrytriedtopreventthesaleofthemagazinebyclaimingitwaslegallyobscene,andthatitviolated"localcommunitystandards."Larrywasadefiantmanwhowasdeterminedtodefendhisrights,andwiththehelpofhislawyer,ColinIssacman,thevariouschargesthatLarryfacedsoonbecamemattersofgreatConstitutionalprinciple.

Flyntpaidaveryhighpriceforhiscontroversialendeavors,andinmanywayshispersonallifebecamefilledwithtragedy.Butwiththeconstantsupportofhislawyer,Flyntfoughtfortheprincipleshebelievedin,andinonelastgreatlegalbattle,hetookhiscaseallthewaytotheSupremeCourt.TheresultwasanimportantconfirmationofthecontinuingimportanceoftheFirstAmendmentinAmericanlife.
