Theirdazzlingcolorsarethankstotheyearsinthe17thcenturywhenTulipmaniaswepttheglobeandthemosteye-catchingspecimenschangedhandsforasmallfortune.Butlikearainbow,thiscolorfullandscapeisashort-livedphenomenon.Whentheflowersaregone,thelandwillbecultivatedforarathermoremundanecropofvegetables.TheNetherlandsproducemorethanninemillionbulbsayear.
