Previousstudieshadconcluded"inconsistentfindings"aboutwhetherrunningcouldlowertheriskofdeathbeforethenormaltime,accordingtotheresearchers.LeadresearcherJimWhite,aprofessoratVictoriaUniversityinMelbourne,toldCNN:

"Ourrecentfindingsmayencouragephysicallyinactiveindividualstotakeuprunningandthosewhoalreadyruntokeepondoingit." 

Headdedthatdoctorsmaybeencouragedbyourfindingstopromoterunningasapartof"lifestylemedicine".Intheirpaper,whichwillbepublishedintheBritishJournalofSportsMedicine,theresearcherssayhealthprofessionalsaresometimes wary ofpromotingrunningbecausevigorous(剧烈的)useofithasbeenlinkedwithsuddenheartdeath. 

Jimandhisteamdenythisbynotingthatthebenefitofrunningoutweighstherisk.However,theydidsayadviceshouldbegivenonacase-by-casebasis,asrunningmightnotbeappropriateforeveryone.Althoughrunninghasaclearhealthbenefit,theresearcherspointoutthathigher"doses"ofrunningmaynotreducetheriskofdeathfurther.AccordingtotheWHOsguidelines,adultsagedbetween18and64shouldtake150minutesofgentleexerciseor75minutesofvigorousexerciseeachweek.

EmmaMarrington,darkskiescampaignerattheCPRE,said"We'rehugelygratefultothepeoplewhotookthetimetogetoutandtakepartinourstarcount.Butit'sdeeplydisap-pointingthatthevastmajoritywereunabletoexperiencethenaturalwonderofatrulydarkskyblanketedwithstars.Withoutanyaction,ournightskywillcontinuetobelostunderacoveringofartificiallight,ruiningthehealthofthenaturalworld."
