That'swhentheNMFSturnedtoseaurchinsthatlovedtodevourthealgae.Buttheyhadtogrowtothesizeofacherrytomatobeforetheycouldbeused.Since2011,seaurchinshavebeengrownandusedtohandlethealgaeproblem.Someofthefundsareavailableduetoanunfortunateincident.
In2005,ashipwasgroundedonashallowreefnearKane'oheBay.Whentheshipwasremoved,20acresofreefshavebeendamaged.Whenthereisenvironmentaldamage,theNMFSandotheragenciesreceivefundsfromthewrongdoersandthefundsareusedtorestorethedamage.Somefundswerespentonotherprojectsliketheseaurchins.Whentheyarelargeenough,diverscarefullyplacethemonthereef.
