Thorstensonandhisteamarenotthefirsttoidentifyalinkbetweenadepressedmoodandadifferenceinrecognition.In2010,EmanuelBublandhisteamatAlbertLudwigsUniversityFreiburginGermanyfirstprovedalinkbetweenmoodandidentifyingcolors.Thiswassupportedbya2013paperbyJohnsonFamoftheUniversityofSingapore.

Theteamconductedtwostudies.Inthefirst,127participantswerechosenrandomlytowatchoneoftwovideoclips,whichhadbeenprovedinpreviousstudiestofeeleithersadnessoramusement.Theydidn’tdothatinaspecificorder.Theentiregroupwasthentaskedwithidentifyingthecolorsin48continuedcolorchanges.Thegroupthathadbeenshownthesadclipwasmeasurablyworseatidentifyingcolorsalongtheblue-yellowaxis.

Forthesecondstudy,130participantswererandomlyassignedtowatcheitherasadcliporaneutral(中性的)one.Thesadnessgroupshowedreducedabilitytoidentifycolorsalongtheblue-yellowaxisthantheneutralgroup.
