BythetimeLuXunarrivedinNanjingtostudyatuniversityin1899,healreadybelievedthatChinesesocietyhadtochangeandbeemodern.In1902hewenttostudyinJapan.There,hebeganwritingarticlesforseveralChinesestudentmagazines.Heshowedagiftforwritingandtranslatingandheevenwroteseveralbooks,althoughnonewaspopular.HereturnedtoChinain1909becausehewasinneedofmoney.

AfterworkingforseveralyearsasateacherinBeijing,LuXunagainreturnedtowriting.In1918,hewrotehisfamousshortstoryDiaryofaMadman.ItwasthefirstChinesenovelpublishedusingtheeverydaylanguagethatpeoplespoke,whichhelpedmakeitagreatsuccess.This,togetherwithhisnovelTheTrueStoryofAhQ（1921）,madeLuXunaleadingChinesewriter.

Althoughsuccessful,LuXunstillworriedgreatlyaboutChina’sfuture.In1926,hemovedtoShanghaiandgaveupwritingstoriesinordertodevotehimselftowhathecalleed“penwarfare”.Henowonlywrotearticleswhichcalledonthepeopletofightagainstthegovernment.Forthis,thegovernmentstoppedhimfrompublishinganymorebooks.Hewasforcedtowritehisarticlesusingfalsenames.
