Yorkshire,Englandwasthesettingfortwogreatnovelsofthe19thcentury.ThesewereCharlotteBronte'sJaneEyreandEmilyBronte'sWutheringHeights.Theyoungestsister,Anne,wasalsoagiftednovelist,andherbookshavethesameextraordinaryqualityashersisters'.

Aschildrentheyhadallwrittenmanystories.Charlotte,asayounggirl,alonewrote22books,eachwith60to100pagesofsmallhandwriting.Therefore,theyturnedtowritingforincome.By1847,CharlottehadwrittenTheProfessor;Emily,WutheringHeights;andAnne,AgnesGrey.AftermuchdifficultyAnneandEmilyfoundapublisher,buttherewasnointerestshowninCharlotte'sbook(Itwasnotpublisheduntil1859).However,onepublisherexpressedaninterestinseeingmoreofherworks.JaneEyrewasalreadystarted,andshehurriedlyfinishedit.Itwasacceptedatonce;thuseachofthesistershadabookpublishedin1847.

JaneEyrewasimmediatelysuccessful;theothertwo,however,didnotdosowell.PeopledidnotlikeWutheringHeights.Theysaiditwastoowild,tooanimal-like.ButgraduallyitcametobeconsideredasoneofthefinestnovelsintheEnglishlanguage.Emilylivedonlyashortwhileafterthepublicationofherbook,andAnnediedin1849.
